Here Comes the Bride

Dear Daddy Diary-

I attended a wedding this past weekend. A college buddy of mine was the groom. Whew, do I have some stories from college, but this is a daddy diary, and he just got married, so we’ll save those for another day.

The story that I remember from this past weekend is the speech told by the bride’s father. Prior to the rehearsal dinner on Friday night, I had never even met the bride, and definitely not her father. But, see, I’m a daddy now. And, I have a daughter, so for the first time in my life, I actually remember the wedding reception. Whoops, typo. For the first time in my life, I identify myself more with the father of the bride than with the groom, or groomsmen or bartender or man sitting in the corner of the room with his cumberbund wrapped around his forehead. The dad of the only woman in white spoke about childhood memories of his little girl.

cimg3298It got me thinking about my speech for my now 4-year old Delaney when she gets married 25 to 30 years from now. It will take that long for her to accomplish all of MY dreams.

So, here we go.

Date April 6 th , 2034 (Opening Day of the Baseball Season)

Danielle and I would like to thank each of you for celebrating this wonderful day withus. Delaney Smith is our little girl. Even though she is now Delaney Pujols (remember that this is my version of something that will happen a quarter century in the future), we’ll always remember her as our little girl who popped into this world on July 10, 2004.

From the day she arrived, she’s been a scrapper. She sent her mommy into emergency surgery that same night she was born due to her kicking and singing (not screaming) all the way out of the womb. I knew my wife was tough, but wow, that was a night I will never forget.

Delaney has heard this story several times; it is why she decided to go to Harvard Medical School , graduate withhonors and is now widely recognized as the doctor that cured childhood cancer. We are proud parents. What can I say? I love to brag on my little girl. Sure, you know her as Dr Delaney Smith, Nobel Peace Prize Award Winner, but to us, she is just Mini-D, the little brunette that turns heads with her Grammy Award winning voice. Go ahead Mini. Sing us a little something you wrote. (She blushes, but, obliges and sings her 2022 Double Platinum hit, “My Daddy is my hero.”) It all started with that famous first movie, “High School Musical.” Yes, even at the age of 3, she loved Sharpay and Gabrielle.

Well, I could brag more, but … um …huh, I am paying for this. I think I’ll continue just for a few more moments. Mini D seems to make all the right choices. Whether it’s the choice to become a switch hitter at the age of 4 because she knew that would help her see things from all angles or writing that Pulitzer Prize winning novel, “I Was Born a Smith”, she always seems to be in the right place at the right time. Many call that luck. I call that being my daughter.

So, please raise your glasses to Dr Delaney Smith, accomplished singer, author, pediatrician, and United States Senator. I love you honey. I couldn’t be more proud. Oh yeah, and her husband is pretty cool, too.

(Clink, Clink…”Cheers”)

Back to the present now. Cheers to all you daddys and your dreams for your daughters. Time for me to go to bed. I’m sure when I wake up that there will be a 3 foot 3, 36 pound bundle of love snuggled up next to me. Amazing how they always sneak in there, isn’t it? I CAN wait for that wedding day. I love being a daddy right now.

The Single Guy Settles Down

My little brother always swore he would never get married.  And by never, I mean in a pigs-flying-hell-freezing-over kind of way.

And yet….he met someone.

Her name is Emily.  Like my brother, Emily is a chef in New York City.  They get each other.

And I love that.

So….sweet little brother, as you say your vows today, know that I am thrilled for you. As you say your vows today – I will be heading up your very own cheering section! I am so proud of how you have grown, how intelligent you are and how hard you work. Emily is a lucky girl.

It is amazing when you find someone special.  And though we don’t see each other often, I do love you. And so do Mom and Dad.

If I had a picture of Emily – I would post it, but that will have to wait until we get back!

The Wedding Moment

bridegroomI have a dear, sweet friend who just exchanged wedding vows this past weekend with an amazing guy on Jekyll Island in Georgia.

Erin and I have been friends for almost 10 years – our ‘first date’, if you will, was the night of Y2K.  We were both working for a TV station and were charged with working overnight – giving regular updates to viewers to assure them that the world was still turning.

That night was the beginning of an amazing friendship.  In the past 10 years, we have laughed, cried, supported each other through tough times and rejoiced in each other’s successes.  I always knew she was an amazing catch – in addition to be one of the kindest souls I have ever know, she is funny, intelligent, loves baseball and college football and even has her own subscription to Sports Illustrated.

minierindanielleI was privileged to be her Matron of Honor.  Erin is like a sister I never had. Delaney, as the bride’s Goddaughter, was thrilled to be the Flower Girl, and well, Coop – serving as the ring bearer – he was just happy to be along for the ride.

The weather was hit and miss all weekend.  Scary when you are planning an outdoor ceremony and reception.  The rehearsal dinner was moved inside on Friday night.  As we prepared to walk down the beautiful garden aisle, the darker clouds continued to rush in.  I crossed my fingers that the rain and wind would hold off.

It did.  And, in doing so, created THE MOMENT.

As the Groom began to say his vows, a clearing appeared in the clouds – the sun began to shine down on Erin and Drew as though God had turned a spotlight on them.  I got chills as I watched it happen.  Drew’s eyes filled with tears and his voice took on the slightest quiver.  The sun intensified.  Erin shared her vows, also teary-eyed.  As the last words fell from her mouth, that slight clearing disappeared…the sun falling back behind God’s curtain.

The night before, the Father of the Bride had given his official blessing to this union….and at that moment, I knew God had done the very same.

She was the most stunning bride – and he, the luckiest guy in the world to have captured her heart.

wholefamilyFrom the moment we arrived on the Island, it felt like we were taking a bath in love and Southern Hospitality.  Having the only children at the event, my husband and I were easy targets for beautiful tidbits of parenting advice.  We were given suggestions for forming family traditions, warmly warned to ‘appreciate every minute’, and told over and over again that Coop and Mini were ‘just dar-LIN’.  (Despite the look on her face – she did have a wonderful time!)

I have to agree.  If it wasn’t for the true, natural beauty of the bride, the small people might have stolen the show.  But, then again, I’m biased.

As a wedding gift for Erin and Drew,  I made all of their paper products - the menus, place cards, programs and gift bag inserts.  But I wanted my true gift to be my toast.

Some of what I said to them is written above – but I wanted to share the moment when I raised my glass so they may come back to it again and again.

Erin and Drew – I wish you a marriage, a relationship,  just like that of your parents – one filled with love and based on friendship, trust and respect.  May your love be modern enough to survive the times and old fashioned enough to last forever.

Thousand Word Thursday – Fruit of my Labor

Cheaper Than Therapy

My Thousand Word Thursday picture this week illustrates something that took me THOUSANDS of minutes to do!

As a wedding gift to my sweet friend, Erin, I made all of the paper products they needed – menus, place cards, programs and welcome gift inserts.  I spent the better past of last week in craft-mode, and then when we began the 13 hour drive to Jekyll Island in Georgia – I spent the first solid 8 hours tying ribbons and punching holes.

This, my friends, is the fruit of my labor.

Obviously the colors were taupe (that was the color of the BM dresses) and then that beautiful fuchsia – the color of our flowers!

Such an amazing, memorable event.

Hop on over to see Jen at CheaperThanTherapy to visit the other Thousand Word Thursday participants!
