Stop Talking, Start Doing

You should see my ‘To-Do List’.  It is monstrous.  It is broken down into ‘must do’, ‘want to do’ and even ‘someday’.

And I add to it constantly.  I’m even guilty of adding things to the list that I’ve just completed.  Just so I can cross it off.  Don’t judge me.  It makes me feel at least a little accomplished.

I just lied to you.  I said, “LIST”.  As though there is only one.  Like my ‘to-do list’ is singular.  It isn’t.  There are many.  On notepads, on post-its, on Evernote, on my desk.

And remarkably, they all have a few things in common:

  • They are never completed
  • The same items are often transferred from one list to the next (for months at a time)
  • I keep duplicate lists

I’m told the first step towards solving a problem is admitting you have one, correct?  Well, here goes. (this is painful)

I think I have become a talker.  Let me clarify.  I’ve ALWAYS been a talker.  But I used to be a do-er too.  And suddenly, I’m a talker and a list maker and an idea generator – and even MORE of a talker.  But I’m failing in the ‘doing’ department.

And that, my friends, is miserable.

Every day, I think to myself, “you know what I should do??? ________ (fill in fabulous idea) And then my brain starts to work that idea backwards….  before you do THAT, you need to do THIS and THIS and THAT….oh and THIS. And that idea takes a deep breath and moves disappointedly to the backseat, only to get a few knowing fist bumps from the other would-be ideas who have also been sent packing by the over-talking portion of my subconscious.

And during that time my subconscious was being talked out of its great idea, My ‘to-do list’ was piling up.

So, this resolution is two-fold.

I am going to STOP TALKING and START DOING. But since I recognize this isn’t a one-stop resolution – meaning – I won’t be perfect at it today, I’d love your advice in kick-starting the process.

Stop Talking, Start Doing

I’m talking to me.

Not you.

I mean, maybe you need me to talk to you too, but for now…..  this is more of me balancing and moving forward.

I’ve been ‘talking’ too much lately. And by lately, I mean, oh….maybe the past year.  Sometimes I’m talking to you, sometimes I’m talking on this site and sometimes, I’m just talking to myself.

Either way…. it seems to me, I’ve spent a whole hell of a lot of time TALKING about what I need to do – instead of JUST DOING IT. Let me give you a brief list:

  • eat well
  • exercise
  • organize the kid’s papers
  • respond to emails
  • write this post (and that one)
  • Clean out the office
  • FIND things (I keep losing IMPORTANT items) *sigh*

But instead of getting up in the morning with exercise on my schedule, instead of choosing the right snacks, instead of sitting down and writing, instead of JUST CLEANING the dang office…. I say to myself, “I should really….”, or I write about it, or *gasp* I put it on a list.

A list?  A LIST???

I’ve been thinking about my propensity towards this flaw and I know why I do it.  I somehow hope that by sharing what I need to do, I will feel obligated to do it.

Accountability.

It isn’t working. Because I need to be accountable to me, not anyone else.

So, as part of my journey to a more balanced me, I’m embracing, Stop Talking, Start Doing.
