Giving and Getting – A Twitter Party Event That Does BOTH

I’ve always believed it is one of my primary responsibilities as a parent to teach my small people to be good citizens of the world.  In fact, the ‘Give Good, Get Good’ mentality  has been a true motivator behind this site since it began nearly five years ago.

I have found, as my sweet ones are getting older, that it isn’t so much what I tell them to do, but what I show them. Modeling kind and generous behavior runs circles around sitting on my couch and explaining the many people, the many charities who have needs and they ways we *could* help.  We could talk all.day.long, and while I definitely think it is important to explain the ‘why’s’ to your kids so they understand who you are choosing to help and what their needs might be, I also know it is crucial to DO.

This Thursday, November 15th from 12-1 EST, I’m joining One2One Network and two amazing bloggers, Jennifer James and Crissy Page to host the #BetterTogether Twitter Party.  Unilever has partnered with Feeding America™, the FEED Foundation, and #GivingTuesday™ to raise awareness about hunger in our country. Together they are encouraging people like you and me to band together and find a solution to this extraordinary problem.

So, join me this week, on Thursday, November 15th, from 12-1pm ET for the #BetterTogether Twitter Party. We’ll be chatting about how you can ‘give good, get good’ in your local community – helping families in need – especially as the holidays approach. Understanding the problem, and sharing the message – these are the very first steps.

Date: Thursday, November 15th
Party Time: 12-1pm ET
Location: #BetterTogether
Hosts: @DanielleSmithTV, @MomBloggersClub, & @Crissy
RSVP Link: o2oblog.com/2012/11/making-life-better-bettertogether-twitter-party/
Prizes: One2One Network will be giving away 15 Unilever gift baskets filled with food and personal care products throughout the hour, AND Unilever will donate 500 meals in the name of each winner to Feeding America™. Giving and getting—what could be better than that?

See you there!

Turning Gratitude Into Motivation: Eleven Things Food Banks Need This Holiday Season

I’m not much for cliches… in fact, they typically make me break out in hives, however, poet Thomas Haynes Bayly was on to something when he first penned, “absence makes the heart grow fonder” back in 1884.  At least that seems to be the case for the small people and I.  Having spent the better part of the past six weeks apart, we ‘re behaving like conjoined twins.

When we aren’t physically separated for something serious, like….say, school… we are somehow in each other’s presence.  They won’t eat dinner without sitting in chairs that are touching mine, they won’t change for bedtime without me in the room, they won’t do homework without me leaning over their shoulders.

I am grateful for them.  And though we always talk so much about gratitude in November as we lead up to Thanksgiving, I don’t need this holiday to be reminded of their love and gratitude for me.

And yet – this holiday will be extra special for the time we will have together.  For the presence we will experience, for the gratitude I can teach, for the food we will prepare and share together.

I’ve seen gratitude posts popping up daily on Facebook – once a day for the month of November, many of my friends are taking the time to focus on what they are most grateful for in their lives.  I love this.  It is powerful to focus our energies in a positive way AND being that there are 30 days in the month, we are forced to move past the basics of kids, extended family, health and a roof over our heads.

Oh….. and food.

Whenever we talk Thanksgiving, food is ALWAYS top of mind.  What will you cook?  What is your favorite dish? Where will you be eating?  Does eating too much turkey REALLY make you sleepy?

But while we are busy saying ‘Thank you”…. (an important thing to do, absolutely), it is easy to forget that for 1 in 6 Americans (1 in 4 KIDS)…. these questions don’t even matter.  Because they are hungry. And they aren’t even sure where their next meal will come from – let alone a holiday meal.

If this is your first time visiting me here, you probably don’t know I’m passionate about ending Child Hunger.  If you’ve stopped by before, you’ve heard me talk about this already. I figured now, as I’m surrounded by the goodness that is my small people, I would share something you might not know…  there are 11 items that are most IN NEED at food banks during the holiday season.

This list was compiled by Feeding America:

  1. Cereal
  2. Pasta
  3. Rice
  4. Canned fruits and vegetables
  5. Canned meals such as soups, chili, pasta
  6. 100% juice
  7. Peanut butter
  8. Pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce
  9. Macaroni & cheese
  10. Canned protein – tuna, chicken, turkey
  11. Beans – canned or dry

So, this is me, giving you a gentle nudge – a love tap, if you will…. if you can spare any of these items in the next few weeks, I promise you they won’t go to waste.  Since my efforts to end Child Hunger have been dedicated to the Child Hunger Ends Here program through Con Agra Foods for the last few years, it is worth pointing out that Hunts’ Chef Boyardee, Peter Pan and Manwich are just a few of the Con Agra brands that supply some of the 11 items listed above.

Also – Child Hunger Ends Here is working in collaboration with School’s Fight Hunger.  To register your school or for more information on how your school might get involved, read more.

Ending Child Hunger. Starting in Los Angeles.

My small people went back to school this past week.  Each morning, I fed them breakfast.  I packed them lunch and snacks.  And I made dinner in the evening.  All of these meals give my new 2nd grader and kindergartner the energy they need to LEARN.

My kids are lucky.  We are lucky.  We don’t worry about providing food for our children.  But millions of parents right here in the United States do.  And it breaks my heart.

For the third time, I am partnering with the Con Agra Foods Foundation to combat this problem.  One in four kids is hungry. This? Is unacceptable.

I commit to fighting child hunger

My small dude is sick.  His temperature soared to 103 last night (and that was under his arm).

And it was after Motrin.

I struggled with that ‘helpless mom’ feeling….should I alternate Motrin and Tylenol?…..does this have anything to do with bonking heads with another little boy at the park?  A lukewarm compress?  A cool bath? Should I worry that he is hallucinating a little? (he asked how long we had been at the doctor’s office when he was lying on me on the couch)

He’s better now, but that helpless feeling is the worst.

I imagine that is the same kind of helplessness that wraps itself around a mom who can’t feed her child. Since there are 17 million kids right here in the U.S. who are hungry….there are also millions of moms haunted by that very emotion.

I looked in Cooper’s eyes and saw fever.  I can’t imagine seeing hunger.

Once you learn something horrible, you cant ‘un-learn’ it.  Now that I know one in four kids doesn’t know what their next meal might be…or even IF there is a next meal….I am compelled to do something about it.

For the past 6 weeks, I’ve done videos and written posts about the Child Hunger Ends Here campaign. Because I want to make a difference.  Because I think YOU should know 1) that it is a problem and 2) that you can help.

Child Hunger Ends Here is supported by the Con Agra Foods Foundation and directly benefits Feeding America.

The Child Hunger Ends Here campaign asks you to do a few very simple things (to clarify – I think they are simple and you don’t need to do all of them to make a difference)

Fight Child Hunger

  • Turn an event you are already hosting/joining into a Neighborhood Rally to combat child hunger. (So, if you are ALREADY having a garage sale, a bake sale, a  donate a portion of the proceeds – even 10% would be amazing)
  • Register your rally online – you will get a rally kit (a banner, some posters etc.) - and any money donated will stay in your local community.
  • Tell someone, anyone that child hunger is a problem.  Tell them it effects 17 million kids – kids who are trying to learn, trying to grow.
  • Donate One Dollar. Just One.  When you give One Dollar – you give SEVEN meals – one child can have lunch every day for an entire week because of YOU.
  • Buy any of these Con Agra Brands (Peter Pan, Banquet, Healthy Choice, Manwich, Marie Callendars, Orville Redenbacher, Chef Boyardee) before May 31st and One meal will be donated to Feeding America

I committed to doing a local rally.  In fact, I’m doing two of them.  The first will be this weekend.  (the next will be June 19-20  - a Food Drive at Assumption Church in O’Fallon)

My Neighborhood Rally

  • What:  A Lemonade Stand
  • When:  This Saturday, May 22nd.  9am-12pm
  • Where: The Turtle Creek Subdivision in O’Fallon, MO – between the 8-9th hole of the Golf Course
  • Why a Lemonade Stand:  1) It is important for my children to be involved – a Lemonade stand is easy – even for small people and 2) I want  you to know that your rally doesn’t have to be a large scale event bringing in thousands of dollars to make a difference.

I know most of you can’t stop by to see us….but consider spreading the word, would ya?

Desperate Housewives take a stand against Child Hunger

I am so grateful to be a part of this experience.

If you would like to join our Lemonade Stand Saturdays in May (And I hope you do!), here are the details.

EDITED TO ADD:  Winner is #34 ‘Katie’~  Thank you to everyone who shared their amazing suggestions!

I’ve been sharing my commitment to end Childhood Hunger. I have partnered with Con Agra Foods and Feeding America to tackle this issue. I have promised to have a local rally to do my part.

chehfeatured

I’ve told you about the nearly 17 million kids in the United States who are HUNGRY.  I’ve shared the stats (that’s one of every four kids) both nationally and locally – in Missouri – we’re talking about nearly 300-thousand kids.

It makes me sick to my stomach. But you know that.

So the question is….what AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

I’m excited to announce I have two local rallys planned…..one would involve my church and I am waiting on final approval so I will have to share those plans (fingers crossed) at a later date.

But the second idea is close to my heart.

It isn’t news that I think kids should learn how to help others.

Kids Learn to Help Others From YOU

*By seeing you help others

*By actually doing

*By doing often

Naturally, they have to be old enough to grasp the concept – but I think you can start young. (My kids are 3 1/2 and 5 1/2)

Our rally is simple, but powerful.

Lemonade Stand Saturdays in May

  • Choose any Saturday in May
  • Register your rally online to receive a rally toolkit – including a banner, four posters, coupons to share and a rally guide/information kit
  • Gather your kids
  • Squeeze some lemons
  • Set up a Stand and SELL SOME LEMONADE to End Childhood Hunger
  • Donate at least a portion of your proceeds online (this ensures the money you raise STAYS in your community)

I’m thrilled to have some local friends here in St. Louis who are already planning to join me by hosting a Lemonade Stand in their neighborhood.  I’ll share dates as soon as I have them.

If you decide to rally with us, choose your date, post a comment.  I want to let people know what you are doing and when.

When you set up your stand, take a picture and email it to me – danielle (at) ExtraordinaryMommy.com.  I will post all pictures you share – I can’t wait to highlight your rally.

Since we’re talking about neighborhood rallys, the official launch of this campaign will take place this week in one of the most notorious TV neighborhoods around: Wisteria Lane.

Yes….with the help of Desperate Housewives’ Dana Delaney, the campaign to End Childhood Hunger takes off this week.  I’ll be in LA on Wisteria Lane for the launch and am thrilled we will also be heading to a local food bank in Los Angeles.

I can’t wait to share video and pictures.

As a bit of additional incentive (I’m hoping you’ll host your own rally – and remember it doesn’t have to be a lemonade stand!!), I am excited to be giving away a Con Agra Foods Gift Basket filled with coupons, a reusable grocery bag, Desperate Housewives on DVD and other goodies.

Entering is SIMPLE: Suggest an idea for a rally and you will be entered to win.  (it doesn’t have to be complicated and YOU will be inspiring others with your suggestions!) You have until April 26th to enter. Winner will be chosen at random.

ExtraordinaryMommy.com is not responsible for prizes that are shipped from outside vendors or sponsors. All entries will be pooled together and one (1) winner will be drawn. The winner will have two calendar days to reply via email. Unclaimed prizes will be placed for availability to newly chosen winners after that time. Giveaway is open to all U.S. residents only, must be at least 18 years old to enter. One entry per person, entries accepted through April 26, 2010 ending at exactly 11:59 CDT

Fighting Childhood Hunger

In Southern California, it doesn’t get that cold.  But he always wore a coat.  And his hair was rarely combed.

He carried a reused brown lunch bag with him, crumpled from being gripped by too-tight hands. There wasn’t ever much in that bag.  Half a sandwich, maybe. But he never, ever complained.

When you are in third grade, you notice the lack of showering, and maybe that he kept his coat wrapped tightly around him, but it isn’t until you are older that you realize Thomas* was hungry. Really hungry.

I wish I’d left an apple at his desk every day.  I wish I’d stuffed the outer pockets of his backpack with grapes and granola bars and whatever else I had in my lunchbox.  You know I probably complained…wishing I had cookies instead.

I bet Thomas* would have been grateful for any of it.

I may not have been able to make a difference then.  But I can now.

Thomas* and millions, that’s right, MILLIONS of children living in the neighborhoods around us in the United States live with food insecurity daily.  What is ‘food insecurity’ you ask?  It means they are hungry or in danger of starving.  Many don’t know where their next meal is coming from – or if it is coming at all.

Almost 17 million kids in this very country of ours are at risk for hunger.

That means ONE CHILD IN FOUR IS HUNGRY.**

Maybe a kid on your street?  One sitting next to your child in class? A little girl you see at the park?

Hungry.  For me and many of you…..hunger is a cue to walk to the kitchen or pantry and get something to eat.  An apple, a cookie, last night’s leftovers.  For these kids that is not an option.

And that is NOT OK.

screen-shot-2010-03-17-at-113944-pmSo, from being disgusted by this issue to being committed to taking action – here I go.

I am raising my right hand in the universal sign for ‘stop’ and joining Con Agra Foods to say Childhood Hunger Ends Here.

So, what does that mean?

It means Con Agra Foods is reaching out – via a few people like me as well as some of their brands to encourage people to turn their neighborhood events (something you are already doing – a food drive, a rummage sale, a lemonade stand) into a Childhood Hunger Ends Here Rally by donating a portion of the proceeds from that event to Feeding America.

Can you get involved?  You bet – and easily too.  Head to Childhood Hunger Ends Here, register your local rally, and Con Agra Foods will send you a ‘rally kit’ to make your event a success.  After the event, you simply jump back online to make your donation.

If you are feeling especially passionate about this – you can organize your own event – plan a neighborhood block party to celebrate Spring and ask your neighbors to donate a can of food, have a dinner party and do the same, rally the members of your church, get your kids involved.

The money you raise and the food you collect will stay in your own community.

You must make your donation online after your rally to keep your donations local.

Missouri – 20% of your kids are hungry
Texas 22% of your kids need your help
North Caroline – 19.4% don’t get what they need to learn in school.

Your state, your community, your kids.  Help them.

In addition to the rallies, Con Agra Foods has committed to donating one dollar ($1) for every single purchase of a participating brand, from March until May, up to $2.5 million.  Each dollar donated actually provides SEVEN meals. What brands are participating?

Healthy Choice, Manwich, Orville Redenbacher, Marie Callendar’s, Peter Pan Peanut Butter, Chef Boyardee and Banquet.

Con Agra Foods relationship with Feeding America is more than 15 years in the making.

  • Marie Callendar’s is already donating 18 truckloads of food to Feeding America – that’s 230,000 meals – WOW!
  • Peter Pan Peanut Butter recently made a donation that will provide more than 1 MILLION meals  to Feeding America.
  • While this particular initiative lasts through May, Con Agra’s relationship with Feeding America has already resulted in donations of more than $27 million.
  • Con Agra Foods has committed to $10 million over the next 5 years.

Get to know Feeding America

  • Feeding America provides food for low income families – providing the nourishment they need to thrive together.
  • 37 million – that’s how many people Feeding America feeds each year.  Included in that number – 14 million kids and three million seniors.
  • There are more than 200 food banks within Feeding America.  Those food banks support 63 thousand agencies fighting this hunger epidemic

If you are planning a neighborhood rally – please share with us here (naturally, in addition, to registering in the Childhood Hunger Ends Here site)

Follow this campaign on Facebook or on Twitter for the latest information and more ways you can help.
