Need Snack Ideas For Your Kid’s Sports Team? Suggestions From The Dish

We are a Sports family. All year long.

Just because the school year is winding down, do not think our sports schedule is doing the same. Sure, in the Fall – it is soccer and basketball, but in the Spring and Summer, we are running full-tilt into softball and baseball.  Both small people.  And I’m told this is just the beginning.  (I was not much of an athlete growing up, so ‘traveling teams’ are foreign to me…but apparently they have a place in my very near future)

So…here’s the thing:  as the mom of a couple of little athletes, my job is to keep them healthy and hydrated.  This means skipping the sugary snacks that seemed to populate the end of every Pee-Week soccer game.  ESPECIALLY because they are a) working hard on the field and b) it is HOT in St. Louis in the summer.

But I still want something they will enjoy, right?

Good news.  The Dish… Con Agra’s newest site for bloggers, has a whole list of Quick Snacks for Sports – including items you can dish up on the sidelines and things you can serve on the fly at home. Think peanut butter. Think apples. Think cold water.  Think lemons. Think cheese.

Nice Save, Dish.

Are You ‘In The Know’? A First Look, First Taste With The Dish

Admit it. It is fun to be in the know.

And especially fun when ‘in the know’ and food go together.  At least in my house.  The small people and my husband jockey to see who gets to open and try new foods as they make their way into our home for the first time… and for the kids – getting to take something to school that is ‘brand new’ – well that’s always a treat.  (assuming of course that they *liked* the newest addition to our pantry or fridge)

Con Agra and their newest venture, The Dish, have combined to offer a ‘First Look, First Taste‘ to bloggers interested in expanding their palatte and learning more about Con Agra’s products.  By signing up on the site, you can be among the first to know when a new product, like Orville Redenbacher’s Ready-to-Eat Gourmet Popcorn, is getting ready to hit the store shelves.

This latest offering comes in four flavors: Sharp White Cheddar, Classic Kettle Korn, Farmhouse Cheddar and Signature BBQ.  Once you register for ‘First Look, First Taste‘…it is as simple as requesting a sample for you and your family to try.

Don’t forget there are also plenty of recipes, expert kitchen tips and even blogging advice featured throughout the site!

Finding New Recipes For Your Family With The Dish

I’m bored in my kitchen.

B-O-R-E-D.

I feel as though I’m serving the same old things.  I would detail them for you, but frankly, I’m a touch embarrassed.  Let’s just say they involve chicken and rice, chicken and pasta and well, chicken and….chicken.  I do throw some salmon in there for good measure.  And? I’m terrible at cooking vegetables.  Maybe because I have never truly liked them.

The truth is, I’ve been feeling decidedly uninspired.

(My brother would be horrified – HE is NEVER uninspired)

Why, you ask?  Likely for some of the same reasons you do. (I’m assuming you occasionally have this problem, yes?)

1) I’m not a gourmet chef -  I assume all fancy meals require ridiculous skill

2) Between work, homework, and small people activities, I don’t have that much time at the end of the day

3) I need something everyone will eat.

Now, there are LOTS of resources out there to help me, yes?  But I decided to visit my friends at The Dish to knock me out of my slump.  Hopefully this can kick you into gear as well.  In addition to a variety of food-related resources, The Dish has a section dedicated specifically to recipes.  Many sites, do this, I know…. but what makes this special:  with one quick glance I can see a picture of the meal, how long it will take me to prep the meal, the total time to make it (IMPORTANT), how many ingredients I will need AND how many people it will feed.  In only a few seconds, I can determine if this is a meal I want to try out on my family.

If a dish is only going to take me 25 minutes to prepare, I am far more likely to tackle something new – and risk trying something my small people (or husband) may be having for the first time.

And, in addition to the basic recipe section, there is a Seasonal Spotlight Category dedicated to dishes I may want to try during that specific time of year.  This keeps me feeling festive, yes?

Now… to decide…  what to try first?  I’m thinking I need to ask Supermarket Guru and Dish Expert, Phil Lempert, to go shopping with me….

Fighting Child Hunger: Through The Eyes of Children at Marian Middle School

It is easy to give when you have a lot.  You know what I mean.  The kid’s school says ‘food drive’ and you head to the pantry to grab a series of canned goods you know you can replenish on your next trip to the store.  You pass someone with a sign that says, “Homeless: Will Work For Food”… you have cash in your purse, so you put some in their hand.

It doesn’t hurt. You didn’t have to think about it long and hard.  You didn’t wonder how you would ‘manage’ to feed the hungry mouths in your family while choosing to feed someone with a greater need than your own.

It is the people who give when it isn’t easy…. the people who teach children to give when it isn’t easy that I admire the most. They are the ones you and I should be taking lessons from on a regular basis.

Take Marian Middle School in St. Louis, Missouri….an oasis of education, of love, of giving….for 72 girls in 5th through 8th grade.  The school is in its 12th year and pulls girls from all around the St. Louis area…23 different zip codes, to be exact.

The school is making it a goal to break the cycle of poverty through education.  All of the families who entrust their girls to Marian are at or below the poverty level, and yet… they give.  The school, the girls and their families are actively working to fight hunger in their community. Through their efforts, they are also combating childhood obesity.

And it is amazing.

When I agreed to work with Con Agra Foods for the third time on their Child Hunger Ends Here Campaign, I loved that they were partnering with Schools Fight Hunger.  Why?  Because I think it is so important to involve kids in the process of combating child hunger.

And the girls at Marian do it with gusto – just like they do everything…learn, greet others and spread kindness.

Let me share the highlights…. since these girls and the men and women who lead them wouldn’t settle for just ONE way to fight this epidemic.

The Garden Project – A garden planted and cared for by the girls of Marian that provides food for the school’s Prepare and Share program (detailed below) as well as a few families in need.  The additional benefit of the Garden, is, naturally, its ability to serve as an educational tool. (think science class) In partnership with Saint Louis University, the Garden belongs to the entire school, but is the ‘baby’ of the 5th grade class.  It is lovingly planted and maintained by small hands.

Prepare and Share.  The girls learn that Cooking Matters.  For seven weeks, these young women at the school will rotate through a program that helps them to understand how to make healthy food choices.  They learn to shop for the ‘right’ foods. While many of these girls have food at home, it isn’t often the most nutritious. They keep food journals.  They learn to cook at the school and for their families. They take food home and, in fact, their families will even ‘grade’ them on their efforts.

Service Learning Class: The Lesson: Hunger is not just a ‘me’ issue.  It is local.  It is national.  It is global.  The girls of Marian are learning to combat hunger through service.  With pockets full of pennies and minds brimming with bright ideas, these young woman work to raise money for Kids Against Hunger – an organization that provides packaged foods to 3rd World countries.  With a goal of $1000, these girls have planned an ice cream social, a movie night and a lemonade sale.  And daily, they come to school, change clutched tightly in their little hands. Of the $800 they have raised so far, more than $200 has been in coins.

Last year, in a student-lead Thanksgiving effort, the school collected more than 500 canned goods for Hosea House, an organization that provides service to needy families in South St. Louis in times of emergency.  It won’t surprise you to know they are doing the same thing again this year.

They give, expecting nothing in return.

Let this be a lesson to us.  If the smallest among us can give almost all that they have to make sure no one around us goes hungry, why not let them be our example?

This post is part of a series in my effort to raise awareness about Child Hunger.  I have been working with Con Agra Foods on their Child Hunger Ends Here Campaign.  All thoughts are my own.

Turning Gratitude Into Motivation: Eleven Things Food Banks Need This Holiday Season

I’m not much for cliches… in fact, they typically make me break out in hives, however, poet Thomas Haynes Bayly was on to something when he first penned, “absence makes the heart grow fonder” back in 1884.  At least that seems to be the case for the small people and I.  Having spent the better part of the past six weeks apart, we ‘re behaving like conjoined twins.

When we aren’t physically separated for something serious, like….say, school… we are somehow in each other’s presence.  They won’t eat dinner without sitting in chairs that are touching mine, they won’t change for bedtime without me in the room, they won’t do homework without me leaning over their shoulders.

I am grateful for them.  And though we always talk so much about gratitude in November as we lead up to Thanksgiving, I don’t need this holiday to be reminded of their love and gratitude for me.

And yet – this holiday will be extra special for the time we will have together.  For the presence we will experience, for the gratitude I can teach, for the food we will prepare and share together.

I’ve seen gratitude posts popping up daily on Facebook – once a day for the month of November, many of my friends are taking the time to focus on what they are most grateful for in their lives.  I love this.  It is powerful to focus our energies in a positive way AND being that there are 30 days in the month, we are forced to move past the basics of kids, extended family, health and a roof over our heads.

Oh….. and food.

Whenever we talk Thanksgiving, food is ALWAYS top of mind.  What will you cook?  What is your favorite dish? Where will you be eating?  Does eating too much turkey REALLY make you sleepy?

But while we are busy saying ‘Thank you”…. (an important thing to do, absolutely), it is easy to forget that for 1 in 6 Americans (1 in 4 KIDS)…. these questions don’t even matter.  Because they are hungry. And they aren’t even sure where their next meal will come from – let alone a holiday meal.

If this is your first time visiting me here, you probably don’t know I’m passionate about ending Child Hunger.  If you’ve stopped by before, you’ve heard me talk about this already. I figured now, as I’m surrounded by the goodness that is my small people, I would share something you might not know…  there are 11 items that are most IN NEED at food banks during the holiday season.

This list was compiled by Feeding America:

  1. Cereal
  2. Pasta
  3. Rice
  4. Canned fruits and vegetables
  5. Canned meals such as soups, chili, pasta
  6. 100% juice
  7. Peanut butter
  8. Pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce
  9. Macaroni & cheese
  10. Canned protein – tuna, chicken, turkey
  11. Beans – canned or dry

So, this is me, giving you a gentle nudge – a love tap, if you will…. if you can spare any of these items in the next few weeks, I promise you they won’t go to waste.  Since my efforts to end Child Hunger have been dedicated to the Child Hunger Ends Here program through Con Agra Foods for the last few years, it is worth pointing out that Hunts’ Chef Boyardee, Peter Pan and Manwich are just a few of the Con Agra brands that supply some of the 11 items listed above.

Tackling Childhood Hunger One School at A Time with Schools Fight Hunger

My small girl’s report card was ready and available today.  As a Mom that sees actual grades for the first time for her small girl, I am fascinated to see what clicks for her, what could clearly use a little more attention and what will be the subjects that require extra time.

My second grader is a natural at Math and Spelling….  the Math portion delights her daddy to no end.  English is going to take a little more effort.  But that’s ok.  We can work more at home.  There isn’t anything keeping her from focusing.  She has the time.  And the help and attention from us.

And the nutrition her brain needs to help her concentrate.

Unlike many, many other children.  Like the 1 in 5 children nationwide who are hungry.  And by ‘hungry’, I don’t mean, they are homeless…. I mean they don’t know where their next meal is coming from.  And if they aren’t getting the food they need, it is impossible for them to concentrate in the classroom or at home when they should be studying to understand their school subjects.

Enter Schools Fight Hunger.

Schools Fight Hunger decided to tackle the hunger epidemic in one of the areas our children were suffering the most – our classrooms.  By enlisting the schools, the parents, the children in the fight – the collective community can raise its voice to make sure children have what they need.  Once a school is registered with Schools Fight Hunger, both small and large efforts can be organized in an effort to combat the problem.  A food drive, a bake sale, donations to a local food pantry – they all make a difference.

To date there are more than 2,000 schools registered nationwide – that is more than ONE MILLION kids helping kids to fight hunger.  And?  More than 14-thousand pounds of food has been donated.

In addition, the Con Agra Foods Foundation and Child Hunger Ends Here have partnered with Schools Fight Hunger – for every UPC label collected from a participating Con Agra Brand, one meal will be donated to Feeding America.  This portion of the program runs through December.

How easy is this?

But you and I both know we can do more. In Missouri, where I live…. there are only 46 schools registered. There are an estimated 5-thousand schools in this state.  If more than 14-thousand pounds of food have been donated from just 2-thousand schools nationwide… imagine if just ONE QUARTER of the schools in Missouri registered. That could mean   about 7-thousand pounds of food just from Missouri!

You know you want to do it.

I am passionate about Childhood Hunger and am now working for the 3rd time, with Con Agra Foods on the Child Hunger Ends Here Campaign. All thoughts and opinions shared are mine and mine alone.

Childhood Hunger: How You Can Join Me, Con Agra and Mark Saling from Glee in the Fight

This past weekend, I went home.

And by home, I don’t mean St. Louis.  Right…. St. Louis is where I LIVE, but it isn’t where I’m FROM.

I’m from Los Angeles.  And LA will ALWAYS feel like home to me.  Even when I’m not playing with friends and visiting the beach.

Even when the reason I’m visiting is because of a need in the city, so intense, it makes my heart hurt.

More than 700 thousand kids in the LA area are hungry.  Some don’t know where they will find their next meal.  SOme live, day-in and day-out with that aching in their belly, the headache that starts when you just don’t have enough to eat.

I’m just one person.  But me + a whole lot of fantastic people…. like Mark Saling from Glee (yes! PUCK!) and the amazing team behind the Con Agra Foods Foundation and Feeding America are parterning to End Childhood Hunger. This is my third time joining this effort…. and this time?  We’re getting the schools on board through Schools Fight Hunger.
