Country Superstars Little Big Town Join the Fight to End Child Hunger

I don’t think the numbers will ever stop being a shock to me.

One in Five.

I don’t think it will ever NOT hurt my heart to know there are millions of children right here in the United States who are hungry.

Nearly 17 million.

Unless of course, that number changes.

But it will only change if you and I do something.

I know that is asking a lot.  You likely have small people to feed.  And the holidays are coming.

And I bet you have charities that are close to your heart.

And, of course there is Sandy. Such a tragedy that I can even refer to her without including the ‘Hurricane’ and you still know what I’m talking about. So many of us have given to Sandy – and so many of our local food banks have chipped in, that the holidays will likely be tighter than normal.

But I still think it is important for you to KNOW child hunger is a problem. Even if you can’t help right now, you can tell someone else who can. Spreading the word? That helps.  Because this is important to me, because I think about how lucky we are every time I pack my children’s lunch for school or make them a meal, I’ve partnered, once again with Con Agra Foods and Child Hunger Ends Here.

I spent a few days this week in Nashville, visiting the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee and talking with Child Hunger Ends Here’s latest advocates, country superstars (and now two-time CMA winners) Little Big Town. This group is involved, because, like me, they ache at the thought of children waking up, trying to learn, or going to bed hungry.

Together we packed backpacks for the Food Bank’s backpack program. There are 8500 kids in the program. Eight-thousand-five-hundred kids in a 46-country area.  And after the first of the year, that number will increase by 15% because the Food Bank has received a grant from WalMart.

Think about that: 8500 kids already and there are MORE in need.

How can you help if you are so inclined:

* Donate food to your local food bank – proteins and shelf stable foods are always in need.

* Donate money. According to Feeding America $1 is equivalent to 8 meals. THINK ABOUT THAT. If we gave the change in our cars each week, we’d provide at least 8 meals.

* Volunteer – Your local Food Banks can always use help….some will allow you to bring your kids at certain times.  Just call and ask. If you are looking for other ways to teach your children to give back, start here.

* Talk about it – It may sound too easy, but educating people about this problem…telling them there are simple ways to help – it all makes a difference.

I was delighted to interview Little Big Town about their involvement in this campaign.  I’m excited to share it with you soon.

As I have in the past, I have partnered with Con Agra Foods and Child Hunger Ends Here, though all thoughts and opinions shared here are my own.

How To Teach Your Children To Give

I have these two sweet small people.  But you know that, right? And you also know I have charged myself with the responsibility of teaching them how to be good ‘givers’. I’ve always considered it important, but as I watch them grow, it is taking on a new meaning.  As little-bitty ones, they would help me to shop for adopted families during the holidays, but now I want that ‘Give Good, Get Good’ mentality to exist all year long.

As we look to the East, knowing we can help after the tragedy of Hurricane Sandy, and as we prepare to head in to the holiday season, now is a good time to think about the best ways to teach your small people how to give.  And how you can work together as a family to make the world a better place.

I spent some time on KMOV’s Great Day St. Louis this morning talking about this very thing:

Here’s Hope: My Belief We Can Fight Child Hunger

My small girl is in third grade.  She has a little brother she adores; most of the time.  They fight like most siblings do, but if you were to ask her what her about ‘rule #1′, she’ll look you firmly in the eye and say, ‘Keep Coopy safe’.  One of these days, it won’t be ‘cool’ for her to call him ‘Coopy’, but for now, I can tell he loves that she has a special name for him.  And? He loves her.

In their sweet and sheltered world keeping him safe means getting him an ice pack when he hits his head, reminding him to pack a snack for school, including him when her friends are around, putting an arm around him during the ‘scary part’ of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and offering the evil eye to anyone who dares to comment on his longer blond hair with anything but admiration.

She doesn’t have to sacrifice a portion of her dinner so her brother can eat. She doesn’t take care of him while I or my husband work two jobs to make sure there is food in our home.  Hunger isn’t a problem they know. And for this, I am grateful.  But I’m also deeply aware of food insecurity and how it effects so many children in our country.

I was reminded of this again tonight by something so simple: a song.  Back in April, I was lucky enough to hear country music artists Little Big Town perform the song Here’s Hope live at the Academy of Country Music Awards. They performed the song during the Lifting Lives Moment – bringing awareness to the epidemic of Child Hunger right here in the United States. I spent time on the Red Carpet at the ACM’s asking artists about the power of hope and music and the beauty of LBT singing this song.  I also interviewed Hunter Hayes, the artist who wrote the song about WHY this song resonates as it does.

One in five children are hungry.

I will say it again: 1 in 5 children are hungry.

Tonight, I stumbled across this video on YouTube. As I had HOPED they would, Little Big Town has recorded their version of the song.  And it is magic. I sat with my small people tonight, crying (yes, I did) and listening to it over and over again.

In the second verse…. “There’s a small town girl in the third grade, makin’ sure that her sister gets enough… ”  I looked first to my small girl and then to my small dude and my heart broke a little, for what we have, for what other children don’t and with gratitude that we can help.

For the better part of the past four years, I have worked with Con Agra Foods and their program Child Hunger Ends Here, and while I’m not in the midst of a campaign at the moment, I feel compelled to share this video with you…. I hope you can take a few minutes to get lost in its beauty, to absorb its message.

Maybe it will inspire you to donate a few dollars to your local food bank, to start a food drive at your children’s school, to fill backpacks for a local program, or simply to pass it on.

The inspiration behind ‘Here’s Hope’ is just that – hope that we can make a difference, even a little bit at a time.

Thank you for joining me.  I’m grateful.  And somewhere there is a 3rd grader who is as well.

A Message Of Hope To A Shy Girl

Sometimes it is kindness from a stranger that can make all the difference in the world.  And it is JUST this message that I try, with my whole heart, to teach my small people every single day.

I suppose, because this is such an important message for me – it is extraordinary to see it in action.

My small girl can sing. She has a beautiful, clear voice….a talent I have never possessed.  Listening to her can bring me to tears.  I know, I know….. I’m her mom, so naturally, I’m biased, but it is a talent I would love to nurture.  But she is SHY.  And not just a touch, but truly terrified of singing in front of anyone.  So much so, that she will stop what she is doing mid-sentence if you catch her in the act.

In April, at the Academy of Country Music Awards, I had the chance to sit down with Coy Bowles of The Zac Brown Band. While we were chatting about his children’s book Amy Giggles and his invovlement with Child Hunger Ends Here, I shared Delaney’s love of his music and just how shy she is about her voice.  So he autographed his book to her.

And I melted.

20120526-094849.jpg

I asked Coy where he learned to be so kind and giving.  His answer?  Zac Brown.

I wish I could have bottled Delaney’s reaction when she saw Coy’s message to her.  This is something she won’t forget. I will always be grateful to him for reinforcing not only her love of music, but her faith in herself.  It is a message Coy shares beautifully in Amy Giggles.

My small girl keeps that book tucked next to her bed.  I won’t be surprised if she takes it with her to college. And whether she decides to pursue singing or not, I will know Coy played a part in teaching Delaney the power of kindness and that it is ok to be yourself.

If you would like to make a difference in the life of a child, know that you can through the Child Hunger Ends Here campaign.  One in five children in the United States is hungry. But you can help. The added bonus is music for you: the song Here’s Hope was written by Hunter Hayes and performed by three different artists in order to fight child hunger.

If you would like a copy of the song, purchase a participating Con Agra Foods Brand, head to Child Hunger Ends Here, enter the code you see on the back and you can download one of three versions for free: Jewel, Owl City or Jay Sean’s.  When you do this, the equivalent of one meal will be donated to Child Hunger.

Disclosure: I am proud, for the fourth time, to have partnered with Con Agra Foods for the Child Hunger Ends Here Program. All opinions (and experiences) are mine and mine alone.

Hunter Hayes talks ACM’s and Writing “Here’s Hope” for Child Hunger

I’ve always believed it is one of my primary responsibilities to teach my kids to ‘give back’…. to understand that there are people, kids especially,  who have greater needs than them.  Some kids don’t have toys, or clothes…. and they don’t have enough food.  A few years ago, my small people and I held a Lemonade Stand to raise money for Child Hunger.  I was so proud of how they embraced the project.

I suspect emerging Country superstar and Academy of Country Music New Artist of the Year Nominee, Hunter Hayes was rasied with the same type of empathy because when asked to join Con Agra Food’s Child Hunger Ends Here Campagin, he didn’t hesitate.

In fact… the song that is the crux of the campaign, “Here’s Hope” is what Hunter calls his “1/2 hour song” since it  took barely longer than that for he, Barry Dean and Luke Laird to write it.

While at the ACM’s in Las Vegas, Hunter and I sat down to chat about writing the song and how it feels to be nominated as ‘ACM New Artist of the Year’.

The Red Carpet at the Academy of Country Music Awards: Talking Hope and Child Hunger

We are just going to go right ahead and say tonight was magic. I spent three hours on the Red Carpet for the Academy of Country Music Awards (yes, my feet hurt)…. talking to artist after artist about their ACM experience, what is coming up next in their careers and about the power of HOPE in music. The Lifting Lives Moment during the ACMs highlighted the epidemic of Child Hunger in America – with a gorgeous rendition of “Here’s Hope” – a song written by ACM New Artist of the New Nominee, Hunter Hayes. The song was performed by Little Big Town and earned a standing ovation.

So well deserved.

This first picture you see here?  That’s me going all fan-girl on Clay Walker – the Country Musician who is responsible for my love of country music.  His songs first drew me in 20 years ago…

20120401-220404.jpg

And this here? This is Deana Carter – and ‘Strawberry Wine’ – one of her first singles (also from the 90′s) is one I will always love.  She was nominated tonight as a songwriter for Song of the Year…. she co-wrote Kenny Chesney’s ‘You and Tequila’.

20120401-220455.jpg

You probably recognize Gwen Sebastian from The Voice.  Though she is no longer on the show…. she does have amazing news…Blake Shelton has just asked her to tour with him.  Shocking: she said yes.

20120401-220634.jpg

What is Montel Williams doing at the ACMs? Sharing his love of country music and spreading the news about his newly release COUNTRY music song: Ooh Baby, which benefits MS.  Chatting with him was great fun.

20120401-220437.jpg

The guys from Lo Cash Country were two of my favorites…. they were fun and really embracing their very first ACM experience.  They have a new song coming out soon that they promised would get me up dancing.

20120401-220615.jpg

From the Red Carpet, we headed back stage to await the winners…  What I love the most?  How humble they are.  Blake Shelton was still reeling from winning Male Vocalist of the Year and couldn’t stop beaming about his wife, Miranda Lambert’s evening successes.

20120401-220907.jpg

Toby Keith, winner of Video of the Year, kept everyone laughing talking about “Red Solo Cup’ as one of the most stupid songs he’s ever heard…but how much fun it is to perform – not to mention, this song is the one and only time he’s ever crossed over to the pop charts from country.

20120401-220937.jpg

Thompson Square was shocked to have won Vocal Duo of the Year…. facing stiff competition from powerhouses Montgomery Gentry and Sugarland. This category has belonged to Sugarland or Brooks & Dunn since 1991.

20120401-220855.jpg

So many more highlights – and SO MUCH video to be sharing soon, but I just had to share a few quick snippets.  I truly had the time of my life.  I will confess I was almost sick to my stomach I was so nervous… but as soon as it got started…my adrenaline, my love of interviewing, my love of country music and my commitment to Child Hunger kicked in and you couldn’t have erased my smile if you tried.

A million thanks to Con Agra Foods for trusting me with such an important part of their campaign, Child Hunger Ends Here.  I’m truly honored.

ACM Bound

So, here I go.

On my way to Las Vegas.  Set for the Red Carpet at the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Despite my endless flights of panic this week, the fears that things might not fall into place (including the last minute stress of an en route dress that I was certain would never arrive – but did) I am taking one breath at a time and attempting to absorb this experience.

I will confess….wrapped tightly within my uber-excitement is a ball of nervous energy.  This feels like a marathan I have been training for.  Except I’ve been training my entire adult life and someone finally said, ‘Run!’.

So, here I go.  Running.  And I’m thrilled beyond anything I can express.  And determined to make every portion of this experience count.

My flight left before 6 am this morning and my day promises to continue for the better part of the next 20 hours. I have a full schedule even before my 9am hair and make up appointment tomorrow morning.  Which, incidentally, was the LAST appointment available and is about 5 hours before my silver-clad tootsies step on to that Red Carpet.

What does today include?  OH MY HEAVENS….TODAY!

I trust you know WHY I’m going to the Academy of Country Music Awards, yes?  I first talked about it here.  But as a quick refresher: during the ACM’s, there is a beautiful charitable segment called the Lifting Lives Moment where a special cause is highlighted.  This year, Child Hunger Ends Here, an effort championed by Con Agra Foods, is the focus.  A song co-written by 20 year old ACM New Artist of the Year Nominee, Hunter Hayes, will be performed by Little Big Town.

The song is called ‘Here’s Hope’.  It is gorgeous.  You can hear it on the Child Hunger Ends Here site.

When I arrive in Las Vegas, I will be attending Little Big Town’s rehearsal for their ACM performance of ‘Here’s Hope’.

Giddy.

And then?

I will be sitting down with Hunter Hayes to chat with him about the thrill of being nominated as ACM New Artist of the Year, and well, a few dozen other questions.  I kid.  Sort of.

Also?  If you attended Blissdom, you may have received one of these books, Amy Giggles, written by Coy Bowles of the Zac Brown Band.  I’m ALSO going to be sitting down with Coy this afternoon to talk to him about his book and his charitable efforts with kids.

The book is delightful.

I can’t wait to share all of the video with you.

Whew.

I *should* be tired thinking about it.

But, I’m not.  I’m still pinching myself to make sure I’m not dreaming.
