welcomelittleone_interior2We own Welcome, Little One.  Both of my children think it is fascinating – even though they are clearly past the infant stage.  It is a wonderful, interactive book that celebrates that magic and joy that arrive when the new baby does.

Beloved author and artist Sandra Magsamen uses soothing, lulling text and a wide variety of novelty elements, including touch-and-feels, pull-tabs, lift-the-flaps, a musical sound chip, pop-ups and more to celebrate baby’s arrival.  You will clearly remember all of the special moments you experienced when baby arrived.

Contest runs from April 1st through April 27th.  To enter, please post a comment here and tell us your favorite children’s book – infant through toddlers and teens.

I’ve been Bitten

Every once in a while this happens to me.  I am so enthralled by a new book that I can’t put it down.  I find myself thinking about the characters as though they are, in fact, real people, who I just might encounter at the grocery store.

The only problem with that particualr scenario: they are teenagers and, well, they are vampires.

Seriously.

Have you read any of Stephenie Meyer’s books?  Starting with Twilight (yes, the one just made into a movie) I watched the trailer for the movie and actually got goosebumps.  What if there is something wrong with me?

I’m in love with a series of books about teenage vampires. (Clearly I am not a teenager.  Big shock!) I honestly can’t get enough.  It might be embarrassing if I wasn’t so enraptured that I would rather read this series than do just about anything else.  I have actually been guilty of trying to carry on conversations with my family while reading the books.  I’ve given ‘just a minute’ a whole new meaning.

I can’t say I wasn’t warned.  I had heard about the books and even had a few friends starting to talk about them, but thought: “Really???”  and “I don’t do vampires.”  Wrong.  It was just 2 weeks ago when one girlfriend finally filled me in.  She lent me the first book, Twilight, that day.  Based on her warnings that once I started reading I would find myself lying about going to the bathroom just to keep reading, I held off for a few days.  I started slowly.  I promised myself I would only read at night before bed (just too much to do during the day!)

But, I can’t help it.  I’m addicted.  I grabbed the second in the series off the store shelf 2 days ago for fear I would finish Twilight and not be able to get my next fix.  I’m on page 424 of 563 of New Moon (and….31 pages were actually duplicated in my copy!!  Imagine my horror to miss out on 31 whole pages because  pages 249 to 280 appear twice – thereby eliminating pages 281 to 312.) I do, in fact, love vampires right now.  I’m fascinated.  I can’t get enough.

NewMoon

I’m actually worried that I’m going to finish New Moon, tonight and not have the 3rd one in my hands yet.  What will I do?  I imagine I will be caught up in a swirl of detailed dreams involving vampires and now (gasp!) werewolves. And, an even bigger fear…what happens when I finish all the books in the series?

Clearly I can’t expect Stephenie Meyer to write as fast as I read.  Or can I?  :)

A little early Christmas

Here is something you need to know about me:  I absolutely love to read.  Books have always held a mystical place in my life. From the moment you crack one open, you are transported to another world.  You can be anyone, try anything.  You can be a sea turtle, a little boy who talks to Santa, the star of the football team, the first girl to become President, an artist, an athlete, a magician, or the King of the Jungle.  In fact, you could be all of these things at once.  That is the power of the written word as it combines with your imagination.

It is this love, this passion for books that I desperately want to pass on to my children.  And, I truly believe, it is not only the story, but often the pictures that can capture the imagination of a child.

Now pretend that child is me.  And pretend that child got a fantastic surprise in the mail today:

They are hardcover, and solid. They are rich with breathtaking pictures.

The stories are pure magic.  Only three days passed from the time I ordered them until I had them in my little hands.  I couldn’t put them down until I had pored over every page….and taken in every illustration.

These books are straight from the publisher: Mackinaw Island Press.  Here’s a little bit of heaven for you: you can read every page, of every one of their books online.  How about this…I’ll take you right to their free previews.  (tell me which one is your favorite!  I love Santa Goes Green, ‘Twas the Night Before Summer, and Sleeping Bear) Now….you may be wondering why they would benefit from showing you every little detail – simple – they want you to fall in love with the books.  Oh…and you will.  And, you know as well as I do, that reading a book online – even with your child in your lap – is just not the same thing as curling up next to them to read a bedtime story.  Not only do they have picture books (a current favorite in my home), but there are chapter books for older kids too!

The books I ordered are going to my kids and to other children I love.  I trust that these baby novels will end up on a ‘favorites’ shelf next to those same kiddos.

Possibilites…

Is it possible I might enjoy some children’s books more than adult literature (literature is fancy for book or novel)?

Let’s take my latest craving….I think I might actually require Fancy Nancy’s Favorite Words as MY bedtime story.  I just let Delaney think it is her idea.

I have always loved words….and what word-hound wouldn’t adore (fancy for love alot) any book that is crammed (fancy for packed) with a plethora (fancy for a whole lot) of snazzy (fancy for fancy) words?

I can’t get enough of it.

Get it soon.  Peruse (fancy for read) it frequently (fancy for often).

Enjoy.
