Project Motorola XOOM: An Adventure

I used to sit in my 8th grade classroom and then my high school ones, baffled by the word c-o-m-p-u-t-e-r.

It was a whole new world.  A brave one.  A confusing one.  A big blue screen and flashing cursor.  Bits and bytes.  Out of my league.  I didn’t jump in.  Back then, I wasn’t an ‘early adopter’.

I didn’t speak tech.  And I will confess to being very afraid.

And then there was the Internet.  And email.

But a few years ago something changed. Technology began to reach out to people like me…. a degree in computer science wasn’t a requirement to embrace this space. Computers…  they have moved from my desk to my lap. From cell phones to smartphones and tablets – oh my!!!

The TABLETS…. recently I was given one of these… a Motorla XOOM to try out.  Until it arrived, I had been carrying my laptop with me EVERYWHERE. I took the XOOM with me to BlogHer in San Diego.

(Can I confess my previous inner dialogue regarding tablets?  It is much like someone mentally mouthing off about kids before they have kids…. I would sit…  fill in the blank: at the airport, in a restaurant and think: SO WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?  It looks like a big phone. Meh. I can admit when I’m wrong.)

And I was wrong… on so many levels.

Though I love my smartphone, it is not a replacement for my laptop.

I cannot update my blog from my phone, but from the XOOM?  Piece of cake.  (You see the picture?  That is me updating my site FROM. THE. CAR. – no, I wasn’t driving…. that would be a good trick, wouldn’t it?)

With the XOOM I can multi-task.  I am a working mom.  Being able to do many things at once is crucial for me. Just like on my laptop, I can open multiple browsers, Twitter and Facebook at the same time.

It is simple to take notes, keep track of my favorite applications and stay in touch with anyone, at anytime.

Oh….and there is VIDEO.  Ok… yes, I know, I know….  everything I do has video right?  BUT, here is the difference…. not everything my husband uses has video.  Let me explain.  1) The XOOM has a built in camera (you will see how well it works in the video below) and 2) I travel a fair amount.  3) I miss my small people.  I mean a lot.  And lately, my small girl has really been taking it hard.  We did a video about it.  So, one of the things that makes the travel easier is a little face to face time.  Makes sense, right? Well, on this lovely XOOM we simply pull up Google chat, my husband can do the same on his computer and home and voila! I SEE MY SMALL PEOPLE.  And that, my friends…. is a little slice of heaven.

Let’s just say we considered exploring the XOOM a bit of an adventure….

Oh! Shoes Supports Soles4Souls at BlogHer and Beyond

I take them for granted.  So do my kids.  Every day before I head out the door, I put on shoes.

Flip flops, tennis shoes, high heels, sandals.  I have choices.  For people in many countries around the world, shoes are a luxury. Something to envy.  Something to wish for. The one thing standing between them and SCHOOL.

Who knew that one pair of shoes could change a life?  Soles 4 Souls knows.  And by donating over 15 million pairs worldwide, (that is one pair every 7 seconds) they’ve seen that moment happen over and over again.

Friends, if you are heading to BlogHer – here is a chance for you to get involved.  Shoe company Oh! Shoes is supporting Soles4Souls and will be at this year’s conference.  AND?  They want to see you. Oh!Shoes Ambassador and blogger, Julie Anderson shared the details with me: (think free shoes for YOU and people in need)

The Nate Berkus Show Premieres

DSC_4625I would be lying if I told you I wasn’t one of the nearly a billion people who thinks Nate Berkus is adorable (even his Executive Producer, Terry Murphy used that word).  And, let’s be honest – adorable is a word we reserve for people who have that mesmerizing combination of physical attractiveness and supreme kindness – Nate Berkus has both, as well as the ability to make you feel as though you are the one person in the room he would LOVE to talk to.

What can you expect from his brand new show launching this week?  Here is the answer: In his own words…. (and yes….that is me asking a question a few minutes in….it is hard to keep me quiet, now isn’t it?)

What did you Take Home From BlogHer?

This was my second experience at BlogHer – and in many ways, I still feel as though I am recovering.

The late nights, the laughter…..  the over-indulgence in all-things hugging, joy and learning….new faces, new blogs to read, new products to try. I’ll confess – I walked away stunned.  I was mesmerized by the soul and heart of some.  I belly-laughed.  I ate waffles on a street corner at midnight.  I shook my fist at the rickshaw driver who deliberately took us the wrong way and charged us.  I sat on the floor outside my hotel room giggling and crying with a roommate I adore until 3am. I visited The Today Show and hugged Nate Berkus.

Oh….just the experience of it all….

For me, the capstone was not only the face to face connecting with friends (believe me, I DO love that) but the opportunity to don my reporter’s hat on behalf of Procter & Gamble.

pg_hafhlogo_hiresP&G created a Home Away from Home at BlogHer – complete with couches for relaxing, tables to prop your feet up and rooms (just like home) filled with the many P&G products you may already enjoy in your home.

Conference goers roamed from Kitchen to bathroom to family room, enjoying the comforts of home – even away from family.

I asked…and you answered…..

When you leave BlogHer, what are you taking home with you?

How to go from Curly to Straight Hair with the Remington Wet to Straight Flat Iron

When I was at BlogHer in New York City, I went to the Getting Gorgeous Event hosted by the lovely Audrey McClelland and Vera Sweeney .  Naturally, I had a wonderful time.  There were friends to hug, products to try and gorgeous for the getting :)

When we left, they handed us these bags FULL of amazing items.  One of them, the Remington Wet to Straight Flat Iron both fascinated me and left me feeling, I’ll admit it, skeptical.  I have big hair.  Thick, curly, hard-to-manage-I-only-wash-it-every-5-or-6-days-kind-of-hair.  Because it is just such a huge pain to do.  (Audrey says I need a Brazilian blow-out…and I mean I want one, but again – with all the hair?  It is like a bazillion dollars to get it done. I digress.)  So, I wondered if it was even possible if this (amazingly priced) flat iron could POSSIBLY tackle my hair. (Hint: yes)

Here’s the video. (And I apologize in advance for the lack of makeup-ness.  Try not to be frightened.)

And here’s where you can buy it online if you so choose.  (P.S. – this isn’t an affiliate link….and no one asked me to write about this :)
