Creating an Alliance…. Building a Tribe

She said, “Sometimes I feel scattered, running in too many directions.  Sometimes I feel lost entirely.”

And they said, “We understand.”

She said, “I wish I was funny.”

And they said, “We think you are.”

She said, “The worst part is when you feel alone, and you FORGET what you have accomplished and you feel as though you are drowning under the weight of what you haven’t done….”

And they said, “We do that too.”

She said, ” I know what I really, really want to do….deep down in my soul.”

And they said, “How can we help?”

She took a deep breath and looked from one beautiful face to another.  She thought she knew why she had flown 21-hundred miles from St. Louis to Los Angeles….  why she had driven an additional few hours up the coast and was now seated in this….  this yurt….  surrounded by these brilliant women.

The goal was to learn…

to grow…

to stretch…

wasn’t it?

She was feeling rather Eat, Pray, Love-ish….

Maybe this trip to Ojai wasn’t about the goal after all, but the journey.

She had come ready to think, to prepare….to return to her own corner of the Internet and implement what she had learned…  But instead she contemplated, she ruminated, she devoured the  conversation, the exchanges, the friendships.

She had come ready to talk ‘giving back’ through blogging with two incredible women who live goodness and change and was instead inspired by the collective love that a group of brilliant minds can generate.

She sat outside by herself at one point, the creek a soundtrack to the experience….  trying to understand what was happening.  (She talks to herself a lot)

And she realized.

This.

Is a Tribe.

And this tribe of 31 women? Said nary a negative word over the course of 72 hours.  There was never a mention of what they didn’t like in this space – only what they love.  And who they love.  And why they love.

And from love is born a willingness to support.

And a desire to witness success.

And from love, support, and success, my friends….  you have yourselves a TRIBE.

And it is for this journey, this circle of support, that she traveled to Ojai.

A million thank yous to the women who made Ojai the magical experience that it was….  thank you to Leane, Jessica, Andrea and Cyn for taking the risk – to Moji and Paper Culture for understanding what we were trying to accomplish, to Lisa for the visible reminder of that magic that I have on my key chain every day and to each of the amazing women who created each moment of that journey with me.

I am extremely grateful.

Tim Gunn and a Mini Project Runway Challenge

Last night I met Tim Gunn.  He is one of the most kind, genuine people I have met.

I walked into the room feeling decidedly fashion-less…..but a man like Tim can change that.  He issued a challenge to our group of women (we were on teams) – take a T-shirt and a secret bag of ‘goodies’ and create something that is “stylish, innovative and says ‘fashion’”.  I’d say our team of lovely ladies did pretty well.

Brands and Bloggers: Starting the Conversation

This new world of social media, of virtual interaction, of brands and bloggers working together – it all feels a bit like the Wild, Wild West to me.

How should we engage with each other?

How and why do brands decide to work with a particular blogger?

How and why do bloggers decide to work with a particular brand?

How much do we disclose?

Do we get paid?  Should we get paid?

This is a topic you have probably been hearing about a lot.  (Like at TypeAMom’s Town Hall) (click for a replay)

For me, it is simple.

It starts with a conversation. It must be organic.

I have to like the product.  For real. And you have to like me.  (or think I am the right fit for you)

You have to know that I have two small people – so teenage clothing, teen tech toys, middle school reading material – it doesn’t apply.  You have to be ok with my voice – with the ‘me’ that I share online on my blog, on Twitter, on Facebook, on MomTV.  I use video quite a bit, if you prefer the written word, I might not be your girl.

Brand Relationship

One brand I have been working with quite a bit lately is E.L.F Cosmetics.  I’ve done a giveaway for them, I worked with them on my Snazl Stories and I did a Make Up At Home Party….so I did videos and blog posts.

I wasn’t paid to do any of it.  I did receive the large make up kit when I gave it away (so I would know what I was talking about) and for the MUAH party – all of the makeup was provided for everyone to try.  My friends made out like bandits.

I like E.L.F Cosmetics.  They make me feel good and fit my budget. And I had used them before I was approached for the party or giveaway.

For E.L.F’s part – I imagine they know that I like them.  Clearly they wouldn’t want someone to pretend, right? So, in me, they have someone who believes in their products, in their philosophy (that beauty comes from within) and isn’t afraid to tell the truth (I like the Mineral line more than the original line)

I know that E.L.F doesn’t have a traditional marketing budget, so they rely on word-of-mouth.  They rely on people like me to share our honest opinions.

That said, if E.L.F does ever have a marketing budget in place, I would love to work with them on a more detailed level.

Because I like the products. Because I am one of their consumers. Because I am honest.

The ULTIMATE Party

So, when I think girl-party, I think Paaarrr-taaaaay. I might even think lip-synching.

I picture dancing around like a maniac to ‘Let’s Hear it for the Boy’ by Denice Williams (yes, that was a Footloose drop) or maybe a little Cyndi Lauper and ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’.  As long as we are going old school – cue up the Beastie Boys and ‘You Gotta Fight For Your Right to Paaaarrrr-taaaay’.  Are you singing along yet?

 Ultimate Blog Party 2009

I’m so excited you stopped by!  I hope you will stay for a minute and maybe even *gasp* comment?  You know I love to hear from you.

Parties have always been a great opportnity to mingle or observe depending on what kind of girl you are – maybe you like to be the center of attention – maybe you prefer to kick back on the edge of the action taking it all in.

Either way, the Ultimate Blog Party is the perfect way to throw your hat into the proverbial blogging ring.  Last year was my first Par-tay.  I didn’t know what to expect, but I can tell you – I certainly didn’t know there would be hundreds and hundreds of women bloggers joining the festivities.

This is just like having all of your favorite people in one room – AND knowing - they brought all of their favorite people with them – and THEY, in turn brought their favorite friends.  You will spend the next week surrounded by like minded women. You can stop by to visit as many or as few as you like.  Learn a little, love a little.

ExtraordinaryMommy has grown a lot since last year’s Party.  But, for the most part, I have stayed the same. I’m still a mommy.  Still think my kiddos are fantastic.  Still love my life.

minicoopmesmallI started this site because I think being a Mommy is an Extraordinary thing – whether you have 10 kids or one, whether you work, stay home or work at home, whether your kids go to school or you homeschool.  We have a common bond.  We made an ordinary, extraordinary decision – to mother a child.  It is challenging and rewarding, scary and silly, amazing and terrifying. It is, by far, the most incredible thing I have ever done.

Deep in my heart I know moms don’t give themselves enough credit.  We often feel guilty and inadequate.  But, daily, we are doing something Extraordinary – we are forming actual people – we are helping them to understand right from wrong. We are teaching them to read, to tie their shoes, to ride a bike, to stand up for themselves, to stand up for others, to protect their hearts and to dream.

As you take full advantage of the Ultimate Blog Party, and you bunny hop from one amazing blog to another – take note of the ones who speak to you. Comment if you like what they have to say (we can never get enough comment love – is anyone out there?) And come back to visit.  Often.

Thanks to Susan and Janice at 5MinutesforMom for hosting this fabulous bash. The party runs from March 20-27th. Join in.

Love meeting new bloggers!

OK…so, one little post about the Ultimate Blog Party, and I’m making new friends!  I love it!  I love connecting with other moms…other women who understand where I am coming from…and what it is like to live the Extraordinary life of a mommy.

So many fabulous blogs out there to read….I’m trying to work my way through.

However….my sweet Cooper, has now made his way downstairs for the SECOND time…leaving my sleeping husband upstairs.  All he has to do is bat those big, blue eyes and hit me with that sweet voice, “Hi Mommy” and I absolutely melt!  That little blond boy has my heart wrapped around his little finger.

Oh…gotta go…think he just hit the pantry for a late night snack!  He’s a growing boy, don’t ya know!
