Spice It Up! Sara Lee Dessert Giveaway

Please tell me you love desserts as much as I do!

For some reason my sweet tooth reaches its peak during the Spring and Summer months – I think it is the notion of BBQ’s, parties and family get-togethers.  Desserts at these events are required, aren’t they?

I’m always looking for new way to spice up desserts I serve at home and those I take with me for special occasions.  The fabulous folks at Sara Lee have given me TWO amazing things to share with you:  the first – a couple of recipes you can use to spice up your warm weather festivities, and the second – the opportunity to win FIVE free desserts from Sara Lee.

Two winners will get FIVE coupons EACH for a free Sara Lee dessert. (Each coupon  is up to $7 in value – so that is 5 different events – and Sara Lee would have you covered.)

I’ll tell you how to enter to win in a minute, but first, the recipes:

sara-lee1Pound Cake Flower Power

Ingredients

2 Sara Lee Pound Cakes
3 varieties of assorted fresh fruits
(oranges, strawberries and star fruit shown)
1 pound bag of green grapes
1 large egg white
1 1/3 cups sifted powdered sugar
1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract
2-3 drops assorted food coloring
1 bag of wooden skewers
Assorted sizes of flower and round shaped cookie cutters
1 decorative flower pot or basket and floral foam to hold skewers in place

Method:

* Trim the top, bottom and sides of the pound cake just enough to remove the golden brown pieces.  Slice the trimmed cake in half horizontally making it into two even, approx 1 inch thick sheets.

*Press the flower cookie cutters into the sheets to form flowers.

*To make the frosting: In a mixer, add 1 egg white, 1 1/3 cups sifted powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla on medium setting until firm and can maintain stiff peaks.  Mix 2-3 drops of food coloring to turn desired color. Spread frosting on both sides of each flower and place on parchment lined cookie sheets.  Place in freezer for at least one hour before sliding onto skewers.

*Fill flowering pot with foam and position each flower in pot at varying heights.

*Cut oranges into wedges and fold back half of the peel. Curl fold around finger and side onto skewer.  Position at varying heights in bouquet.

* Slice star fruit and strawberries and slide onto skewers.  Position between flowers.

* Arrange grapes at base of flower pot

saralee21Orange Creamsicle Pound Cake

Ingredients

1 Sara Lee Pound Cake
4 oz softened cream cheese
2 tablespoons of butter, softened
2 cups of confectioner’s sugar
1 tablespoon orange juice
1/2 cup sugar (plus extra for garnish)
1/2 cup of water
1 orange
1 teaspoon orange extract
1/4 cup coconut flakes (optional)

Method:

*With an electric mixer on slow, combine cream cheese, butter, confectioner’s sugar, orange extract, orange juice and zest of 1/2 an orange until smooth

* Create glaze by bringing sugar and water to a boil in saucepan over medium-high heat.  Peel 1/2 an orange with a vegetable peeler, being careful to avoid the white part of the orange.  Add orange peels and reduce to simmer for 8-10 minutes

*Removed peels from glaze, roll in sugar and let dry for 10-15 minutes

*Drizzle remaining orange glaze over top of pound cake

* Spread orange cream on top and sides of cake.  Add coconut flakes if desired.

* Garnish top of cake with slices of remaining orange, a sprinkle of orange zest and a few candies orange peels

Enjoy!

Now…here’s what you can do to win FIVE FREE desserts from Sara Lee.  In the comment section, offer your own suggestion for the most extraordinary way to spice up a Sara Lee dessert.  You can use the pound cake as your base, unless you have another Sara Lee Favorite (cheesecake, anyone?)  Make it a topping, a secret family recipe you’ve been dying to share or a special twist on the traditional.  Of course, the recipes above give you a sample of how to spice it up – but we don’t need a whole recipe, just your personal, simple suggestions.

You will be given a second entry if you Twitter about this giveaway.

This contest will run from until May 31st.

Good luck.

pound cake, ice cream, hot fudge sauce, walnuts and maybe whipped cream

Melt a half a stick of butter, mix in 1/4 cup maple syrup, 1/4 cup orange marmalade and 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans. Stir until all ingredients are melted and of thin consistency. With the handle end of a wooden spoon poke holes into a Sara Lee pound cake, about every square inch or so. Slowly pour the mixture over the top of the pound cake, very slowly, so that it can soak in. Let the cake sit until the syrupy mix cools and thickens some. It’s ready to eat and great with some whipped cream for garnish.

Slice poundcake lengthwise into 3 sections. Spread bottom layer with seedless Raspberry jam & lay the middle slice of cake on top. Spread on french vanilla pudding thickly and add the top layer of cake. Frost the entire cake with sweetened whipped cream or whipped topping (your preference) and top with fresh raspberries. Chill for 1 to 2 hours before slicing and serving.

I’m a little surprised I haven’t seen anyone else mention pursuing this particular approach, considering the selection of flavors available and how potent they are…

Thoroughly mix a (very small) quantity of Crystal Light powdered drink mix into a significantly larger quantity of powdered sugar (for example) and lightly sift over your cake slices. My personal favorites to use this way are Ruby Red Grapefruit and Lemonade.

Be cautious: while delicious, the flavors can easily be overwhelming, and the colorants quite startling!!

I would make a raspberry trifle using the Sara Lee pound cake, cut into bite-sized chunks (probably 2 cakes). In a pretty dish, layer cake, then raspberry jam or crushed fresh raspberries with some sugar, then whipped cream, then make the layers again. It is like a cake parfait.
