Q) I want to change my look....(I'm pregnant, have a newborn, have two small kids, etc.) Should I go for a big change? How do you assess what is right for me?

A) If it has been a while since you've modified your look, I say "Yes, make a change.” Updates can be a lot of fun! However, you should never make a big change during pregnancy…especially one you can’t take back. (I mean cutting your hair vs. coloring it!) While pregnancy is a common time to desire a change, what you are typically looking for is control over something. Your body seems to have a mind of it’s own, and you want to make a change that YOU want, as compared to what your body (and your new baby) seems to want.

Women often regret dramatic changes during this time in their lives. I recommend waiting until your hormones are back in check unless the change you want is something you have done before. If you loved the way you looked with short hair, go for it, but don’t take a chance hoping to like the results. When the 6 inches has come off your hair, you will still be pregnant.

For change that isn’t drastic but feels new, try a few face framing high lights (any color “in foil” is OK during pregnancy) For change after you have kids, keep in mind how much time you do or don't have to work with a new look. Most of the time change requires an adjustment period. I say make gradual changes working towards an entirely new look if that is what you desire.

A stylist you trust is key. They can assess what’s best for you by asking about your lifestyle. By examining your hair density & texture, an expert can tell you what your hair can do without too much work. They can also show you additional options for the days when you have some extra time. (I know, I know, there aren’t many of them, but sometimes….)

For change without a huge commitment, try playing with your clothing or makeup. Wear a new color that you don’t usually choose. Add a new element (wear jewelry, a belt, or swap your old jeans for an updated pair) or subtract some aspect that you’ve always done. You’d be surprised how a subtle change can make a huge difference in how you feel.

She guides her clients by providing a personalized exercise regimen, diet advice, and tips to stay motivated. She has a special talent for helping expectant moms stay on track with a fitness routine and she is a magician when it comes to getting moms back to their pre-pregnancy selves.

Angie found her match in her husband Matt when they were both training clients at 24 Hour Fitness.

Angie and Matt have recently opened their own studio in St. Charles, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Their new business is Emerge Fitness Training. Emerge provides a private, intimate training setting and gives clients a less-crowded, more personal training experience.

Angie has a degree in exercise from Western Illinois University, while Matt received his undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and his Masters from the University of Texas-Austin. Both are certified in NASM, APEX, AFAA, and CHEK Core Conditioning.

Q) What are the most important elements when starting a new fitness program?

A) When you first decide to tackle a fitness program, you must, regardless of your level of experience, come up with a clearly defined goal and a timeline to achieve that goal. This is where I always start with my clients. I need to know what your ‘big picture’ goal is….do you want to lose weight? Do you want to tone? Are you trying to get back into your pre-pregnancy jeans?

Once you have a goal in mind, you need a plan. This “pathway” usually includes a cardiovascular program, resistance training, possibly supplementation (i.e. a multi-vitamin) but most importantly, attention to a menu-plan.

These 4 components, regardless of your goal, are vital to achieving well-rounded results. Your goal will help to dictate what you need to emphasize most….if your goal is losing body fat, you need to focus more on cardio than building muscle.

However, I can’t stress this enough…the most important factor in reaching your goal… the food you put in your mouth. The success of your fitness plan will be directly related to how well you plan for and monitor what you eat.

Let me give you an example. If you are just “aware” of your diet but are not following a plan and you average 2800 calories per day for a week, even 4 days of cardio at 30 minutes each can leave you with unhappy results. It's math! The fact is, 'calories in' (what you eat every day) minus 'calories out' (how many calories your body burns each day…while you are resting or working) will give you a number. If that magic number is positive, you will gain weight, if it is negative, you lose weight.

You MUST KNOW HOW MANY CALORIES YOU TAKE IN EVERY DAY!!

Here's how quickly the calories add up....This is a sample meal many mommys can relate to...its quick and much of it is consumed 'on the go'.

Breakfast
1cup 2% milk 120 Calories
1 blueberry bagel 330 calories
2 oz reduced fat cream cheese 140 calories

Morning Snack
1 banana 105 calories
½ cup of cashews 375 calories

Lunch
Big Mac 540 calories
Small fries 250 calories

Afternoon Snack (I call this grazing!)
Mini bag of dark chocolate M&M’s 240 calories
2 oatmeal cookie 240 calories

Dinner
1 slice of pepperoni pizza 180 calories
romaine salad 8 calories
2 tbsp of hidden valley ranch 140 calories

1 cookie for dessert 120 calories

total: 2788 calories

If these meals look familiar...you must be exercising regularly to combat the extra calories!
