Shop on Black Friday, Boycott Shopping on Thanksgiving Thursday

Ok…. so my post headline probably gives me away.

I love to shop on Black Friday.  I mean, I LOVE it.  But not because there is a deal I MUST have…mainly because it officially kicks off the holiday season for me.  I love being out in the hustle and bustle of the crowds. I adore the holiday music. I love wrapping paper. And ornaments. And red and green. And blue and silver. And I love buying gifts.

But making employees sacrifice their Thanksgiving holiday so stores can make more money?  I find it ridiculous.  And disrespectful to families.

    I normally only do Friday, but I *always* do Black Friday. Like you said, it’s not really about the deal so much as it’s about the tradition. But this year I may have to venture out on Thursday. I hate it, for all of the reasons you mentioned. But this year is the first time in almost a decade that there’s a deal I really need/want. I’m in dire need of a new laptop, but have no new laptop budget. I’m hoping I can score one online to avoid going out on Thursday, but I’ll be ready to go just in case.

    I say YES to Boycotting these stores! I think its stupid and greedy for these stores to open early. I will not have any part of it. I thought it was stupid and greedy for them to open at midnight on Black Friday too. Why can’t they just leave the holiday of Thanksgiving alone? These stores are just following suit of whatever the major stores like Walmart are doing because of GREED. There are plenty of stores that have great sales before Thanksgiving and the 1st week of December too. So why stress yourselves out standing in long lines with other people that are going to be tired and cranky from being up all night shopping just to save a few dollars? STAY HOME AND ENJOY YOU FAMILIES PEOPLE AND STOP BEING GREEDY! BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE!

    Anne – anyone that has told me they are going out on Thursday has said just what you did above – that the stores are offering a ‘can’t miss’ deal that they need. I think what amazes me is – the stores, I imagine, could have offered those same deals on Black Friday, but are choosing Thursday instead (or maybe it is only with the additional money they make by being open on Thursday that they CAN make the offers??) I don’t know – but it makes me sad. I do hope that you are able to get what you need.

    Lynn – you and I share the same thoughts on this. I’m just disappointed. The stores want to make more money, so they are enticing shoppers with ‘amazing deals’ they won’t be able to get any other time – and what I fear – is that there will be so few of those deals that problems and frustrations will arise. I won’t be shopping on Thursday. I will go out on Friday – I do love the tradition… and I do hope people find what they need.

    No we don’t shop the Blak Friday sales and haven’t in years as we don’t have the money. We usually shop the thrift stores. There is nothing we or the kids need bad enough to warrant camping outside of a store. I really find it all ridiculous – that is not the reason for the season at all. All the holidays are becoming too commercialized. Perhaps its because we can’t afford anything these days but we really try to remind the kids of those that have no basics like a roof and a bed when they ask for things a tad out of the ballpark.

    I just heard about this while out shopping today. I think it’s ridiculous. I intend to fully enjoy my Thanksgiving holiday before moving onto Christmas.

    I think they’re offering the deals as a justification for being open on Thursday. Black Friday has turned into a race to see who can open the fastest and get the most people spending money there first. KMart is having doorbusters at 6am on Thursday. I imagine it won’t be long before we start seeing the deals start on Wednesday. I miss the days when Black Friday started at 5am on Friday.
