Quaker Chewy After School Rocks Sweepstakes and Giveaway.

Update, April 19: Winner is #13 – Lisa

My mom always said all she ever wanted to be was ‘a mom’.  She wanted to be with us every morning as we headed off to school – and there every single afternoon when we came home.

She wanted to greet us with homemade cookies and hear every.single.detail about our days.  Who did we play with? What did we learn? Which teachers did we love or dread?

She planned to help us with homework, dry our tears after a hard day and make dinner as we set the table.

For the first few years of my schooling – this was just how it worked.

But, as is typical for many families, she had to go to work.

And my brother and I had to stay in an after-school program.

Thank heavens that was an option.

Did you know that there are 15 million kids in the United States who are home alone after school?  15 million kids who have to take care of themselves.  I had no idea.  It breaks my heart to think there are that many parents who must work to support their families but don’t have access to quality after-school care.

The good news is the Quaker Chewy After School Rocks program, in partnership with the Afterschool Alliance are working to change that by providing quality, affordable after school programs that will allow children to grow and learn.  Naturally, this environment gives parents much-needed peace of mind.

As part of the part of the partnership between Quaker Chewy and the AfterSchool Alliance, 26 thousand current programs will have additional access to important resources regarding nutrition and education.

To raise awareness of the program, Quaker has joined forces with the delightful and talented Miranda Cosgrove (note: parents – you might know her better as Carly from the hit show iCarly.)

As part of a special sweepstakes, you (the parents) can enter to win a private concert with Miranda Cosgrove for your kids and 300 of their closest friends.  You have until April 16th to enter.  (And yes, your kids plus 4 friends would actually get to meet the singer)

Here’s a little sneak peek at the lovely Miranda – being interviewed by my good friend Audrey from Momgenerations.

And this video (also from Audrey at the Quaker After School Rocks Launch Event) will give you even more information about the Program!

If the After School Hours inspire you to spend a little time with your kids – enter to win an After School Supply Kit from Quaker….it is simple: post a comment sharing your favorite  childhood after school memory or something you love to do with your kids now.

You have until April 18th to enter to win the Quaker After School Kit.  Good luck.

ExtraordinaryMommy.com is not responsible for prizes that are shipped from outside vendors or sponsors. All entries will be pooled together and one (1) winner will be drawn. The winner will have two calendar days to reply via email. Unclaimed prizes will be placed for availability to newly chosen winners after that time. Giveaway is open to all U.S. residents only, must be at least 18 years old to enter. One entry per person, entries accepted through April 18, 2010 ending at exactly 11:59 CDT.

When I was a child, we did our homework when we got home and then went outside to play with our friends. Our children are homeschooled, so there is no actual “after school”. :)

I had some interesting experiences after school when I was a child, all at different schools since we were an Army family. I don’t necessarily have a “favorite” memory, so I’ll just go with one that was positive. Haha~ I was an honor student in 3rd grade and was asked to read a story that I created with a computer program for some sort of staff meeting (I don’t quite remember). It would be a few hours after school was over, and my dad was too busy to pick me up just to take me back there. So, my teacher volunteered to watch me and took me to her home. It wasn’t the first time I’d been to a teacher’s home, but it’s always an exciting feeling… and she had a puppy! LoL.

After school, I sit down with my kids and we have a snack together. Some days, I try to make a special treat, but we always sit down and talk about their days. It’s a great transition to the homework and other chores that need to get done.

When the girls were little I used to have a snack waiting for them all set up at the counter- and they each had their own special placemats and candles and whatnot. They really loved it.

We also were *the* house to hang at so we often had friends over. They loved that I was right there listening to them and providing snacks, an ear and whatever else they might like- as well as getting down and playing with them.

Another fun one was playing tea party- we did that at least once a week- still do as often as we can. :)

After school we have a snack, do homework, talk a little about their day and what they need for the next day. Then, they have free time till time for supper, unless there is a soccer match or something for them to go to or a project to do.
