When I pictured having children a million years ago – I knew in my heart of hearts that there were certain qualities I wanted them to possess…. I pictured them strong and independent, fierce and loyal, lovable and fun-loving, but most of all – kind and giving.
A tall order, I know. Now that I am actually a mom – I recognize that individuality is crucial – and for that, they can be boisterous or shy, independent or happier in a group….but I won’t budge on the kind and giving.
And for that, I must model the behavior I want them to mimic.
I must give….of my hugs and love, of my time and energy, of my talents and funds. This doesn’t mean I volunteer 25 hours a week or donate hundreds or thousands of dollars. It means I do what I can.
It means that I show my children what it looks like to give. And I show them that even as small people, they can make a difference.
If you live in St. Louis, I want to invite you to join a special event.
St. Louis Youth and Family Volunteer Event
The Magic House on April 11th, from 1-4pm.
- Our local non-profits have had a tough year – as the economy has struggled, and families have cut back on spending, donations are down.
- More than 20 organizations that welcome family and youth volunteers will be in attendance.
- Organizations will share their missions, their needs & services and provide opportunities for families to help.
- For this event only – the only thing you will need to get in to the Magic House? A can of food per person.
- For more information, visit St. Louis Volunteen (they help youth find volunteer activities) or email info@stlouisvolunteen.com
Hope to see you there. (If you will be attending – comment below – I will look for you!)
