Have you seen this woman? Her name is Paula Radcliffe; she's from Great Britain. She won the New York Marathon at the beginning of November. Her unofficial time was 2 hours and 23 minutes. She is a world record holder who has won six marathons (and that's before this latest win!)
Here's the kicker...she is a mommy. What? No big deal, you say? Hundreds of mommys run for exercise and many compete in marathons. Ahhh...here is why this win is unique. Paula had her last baby in January...that means she won this marathon a mere 291 days after having her little one.
Though Paula continued to run throughout her pregnancy, it had been two years since
she last ran a marathon .
Paula thinks she began training too soon after a difficult labor and delivery, however, training for a marathon is not new to this past champion. Training lasts for several months and includes much long distance running. While this may seem impossible to many of us who have given birth, (I do clearly remember being too tired to brush my teeth) it is amazing to see a woman, a mommy, set a goal that is important to her...and go after it. I love that! Kudos to Paula!
