Spring Into Reading With DEAR Time – Drop Everything And Read With Your Kids

DEAR Time - Drop Everything And Read with your kidsI would be lying if I told you I came up with the phrase ‘DEAR time – Drop Everything And Read’  - on my own.  It is something my small people do at their school and the moment I heard it, it resonated with me. Since I was a little girl, I have always loved to read – magazines, fiction, non-fiction – anything.  I read  on the way to school, at school, after school and before bed.

When my small girl recently begged for ‘just a few more minutes’ of reading as she crawled in to bed, I instantly acquiesced  sharing with her my secret from childhood: I used to pretend I didn’t feel well and lock myself in the bathroom at night – just to get more time to read.  Delaney asked if I had ever told MY mother.  turns out, I hadn’t.

Well, she knows now.

My sweet 8 year old girl is now often flying through 150 page chapter books in two days or less – so we are constantly on the look-out for books that teach her, help her to grow, build her vocabulary AND keep her interested.

We have once such series we share with you in the video below AND, I’m thrilled to be hosting a Google+ Hangout  today at 1pm CST (my very first, if you must know – so do come play!) to talk about the importance of reading with your kids, books that are a good fit for different age groups and how to encourage reading in your home (Hint: we’re going to talk about DEAR time!)

What series of books (or individual books) have you found to be ideal for your kids?  SHARE!  I love having options and new ways to entice my children into reading.

Please do join me on the Google Hangout today (Wednesday 3/13) at 1pm CST. My friend Niri will be joining me – as reading in her home is just as important as it is in ours.  If you would like to join the conversation, please do let me know!

(Live below if you join at the right time!)

Make Guests Comfortable in Your Home – 5 Tips: Keeping Style in Your Life

SILWelcomeGuests2In January, I had friends in my home who I hadn’t seen in half a dozen years. In a normal situation, I would have spent a week fussing over the details, making sure their rooms were perfectly clean and welcoming, but in this case, their visits were a surprise.  My sweet husband invited five of my closest friends from all over the country to our home for the weekend of my 40th birthday.  It was divine.

The sheets were clean.  The bathrooms tidy.  The rooms were warm and there was plenty to eat and drink.  In this case, they came for the camaraderie. But, in most cases, if I’m honest, I do try to put ‘little touches’ in place that let our house guests know we thought of everything.  I don’t doubt my friends enjoyed being here, but I thought it would be fun to offer some tips to make your houseguests’ stay extra special.

Here are my top five tips to make your guests feel welcome in your home.

5 New Spring Fashion Trends for 2013 – Keeping Style in Your Life

Spring Fashion Trends 2013I don’t know about you, but I am actually counting down the days until Spring officially starts – 16 – in case you are wondering. In the middle of the country where I live, we’ve seen more snow and lower temperatures than we have in quite some time, and I’m desperate to start seeing buds on trees, tulips popping from the ground and temperatures that hover somewhere about 65 degrees.

If I’m honest, I don’t think the temperature should ever drop below 75, but clearly, I have to work through that…

The good news is, Spring really is around the corner. Soon, we’ll be putting away the boots and whipping out our warmer clothes.  For this weeks Keeping Style in Your Life, I have a collection of new Spring styles to share with you for this year – and some of the best news?  For some of them – you don’t have to head to purchase a whole new wardrobe, you can shop your very own closet.

Take a look.

How to Organize a Home Office in 10 Steps: Keeping Style in Your Life

How to Organize Home Office - Ten Steps - ExtraordinaryMommy.comWe moved in to our house six years ago next month. I can hardly believe it has been that long.  But what I really can’t believe it that I spent the better part of that time – more than 5 of those years, in fact, sharing an office with my husband. It is a wonder we are both still standing.  Remarkably, from the time we were moving in, we planned to share an office.  We thought it was a brilliant idea. But it wasn’t.

You see, we both work from home.  Neither of us are ‘quiet’ people.  And my job actually requires some semblance of solitude.  When I need to write – I need to think – and quietly.  So his conference calls, his sudden bouts of ‘funny’, and his random thoughts just didn’t make for a productive environment for me.

Fortunately, we came up with the perfect solution – one that created a space just for him – and one just for me.

And now, my office is my sanctuary.

Here are 10 Tips for Organizing Your Home Office

Do you have additional tips for keeping your home office organized and productive?  As I look around my office right now, I can see that I have neglected to take those 10-15 minutes today to organize the clutter and papers.  I definitely still need to do that.

When Was the Last Time You Cried?

I wish I could tell you I didn’t cry easily, but alas… I’m a crier.  And I’ve passed this trait on to my small people.  They are equally as sensitive.  We cry when we are happy, when we are excited and yes, when we are sad, sad, sad.

Hallmark commercials, touching stories on the news, and of course movies – they all get to me.

The other night, I sat on the couch next to my small dude as he watched Despicable Me.  I honestly wasn’t paying much attention until he turned to me, tears in his eyes, distressed about three little girls who wanted so badly to be loved and adopted.  His little heart was visible through his eyes….

I’ve been there… so many times.  However, my most recent bout of tears had nothing to do with a movie or a commercial…. it was all about real life:

When was the last time you really let loose and cried?

Amazing Video! Meteor Hits Russia, More than 500 Reported Hurt

I sat on the couch with my small people last night watching the Nightly News as they reported on a giant asteroid that will pass close to earth today – reportedly around 2pm this afternoon.  It apparently won’t be visible to the naked eye… it has been tracked by NASA for quite some time, and it DOESN’T PRESENT ANY DANGER TO US.

And yet, I wake this morning to news that a meteor has hit the Chelyabinsk region of  Russia (it is caught on camera – look below) and it is reported that some 500 people are injured.  Early reports say this meteor may be related to that same asteroid, but it is too early to confirm. This region is more than 900 miles from Moscow and based on what I am reading here and here, many of the injuries are related to flying glass from explosions (as a result of the meteor breaking apart as it fell).  Scientists are estimating it weighed 10 tons and was traveling at 33-THOUSAND miles per hour! Witnesses describe the sound like a ‘sonic boom’.

Watch the video for yourself.  Incredible.

Hair Styles: Quick and Easy – Double Braid and Fishtail: Keeping Style in Your Life

Double Braid Fishtail Braid FeaturedOne of the many commitments I have made to myself lately is to step outside my all-down-all-boring hair comfort zone.  So, I’ve been playing with all kinds of hairstyles.  Part of learning to keep style in my life has been to remind myself that the fashion and beauty I have always loved still matter and still exist within me.

If you know me, you know that I’ve had long hair for years now – in fact – I started growing my hair out shortly after I got out of TV officially back in 2001.  Back then, I was required to have an ‘Anchor bob’ – so my hair was at my shoulders and it never felt like ‘me’.  As soon, as I was done with TV, I started growing it and I’ve never looked back.  But, that doesn’t mean I’ve been an expert at styling it.  In fact, I’ve spent the past few years mastering how to wear it down.

B-O-R-I-N-G.

But not anymore.

As part of Keeping Style in my life… I’m branching out.  Here are two easy, quick (and FUN!) hairstyles for long hair you can do at home in no time.

What do you think?  Any other hairstyle suggestions you think I should tackle?  I would love to try a few more!
