40 Days of Water: The Extraordinary Conclusion

Sometimes you take part in a movement that changes you. For me, this is one of those times.

For forty days, I committed to drinking only water. It wasn’t because I was on a diet. It wasn’t because of my traditional Catholic Lenten sacrifice, though admittedly, it did coincide beautifully. I can’t claim I didn’t have any moments of slipping up, but my efforts were valiant. I started my day with ice water. I kept a bottle at my side. I ended the day with a glass nearby.

My reasoning for this commitment was this: in the country of Uganda, the thing I take most for granted – the gift of water – is something they lack desperately. I turn on the shower and water flows.  I head to the fridge, I pour water for my small people, I make ice, I fill pots for boiling….all without a second thought.

In Uganda - they walk for miles for what flows freely from my faucet.  That hurts my heart.

34.5 million people live in the country. 33% of them live without access to safe water.

Working with Blood Water Mission, I joined hundreds of people in this 40 day journey.  And it made a difference.

Blood Water Mission Danielle Profile

You see…. for every traditional drink I skipped – wine… coffee… ice tea…..I donated the money I would have spent to this amazing organization.  Blood Water Mission has made a commitment to overcoming the water and HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa…with the help of people like me. And you.

For every drink skipped, for every dollar donated, it is estimated gift of water can be given to one child in Uganda for an entire year.  I skip coffee for ONE MORNING- the equivalent of $2 – and TWO children can have water for ANN ENTIRE YEAR. The pure power in that is extraordinary.

BWM TotalsLooking at the totals now… I am both amazed and overwhelmed.

In the 40 days I participated in this mission, I gave up 107 drinks for $293.

I am proud and humbled by those numbers.

But even more so, but what can be accomplished when people work together for something so beautiful like this.

So far…. LOOK:

Blood Water Mission Total

That’s nearly 11-thousand drinks given up.  And more than $21 thousand dollars raised.

Water.  The gift of so much beautiful, amazing life-giving, clean water – for people who deserve something SO VERY BASIC.

To everyone who participated…. I’m grateful.

To everyone who is just now learning about the magic that is Blood Water Mission… take some time, look around – the work they do does not stop with 40 Days.  There is so much work still to be done….

Hair Tutorial: Braided Bun – Keeping Style in Your Life

Hair Tutorial: BraidedBun Extraordinary MommyYou know I’m having fun with the hair tutorials, right? My husband has always encouraged me to wear my hair up – has always liked it when I have worn my hair in a ponytail and the like, but I have always hesitated.  Some silly insecurity.  Wearing my hair down has always been easy – it has always felt like ‘me’, but doing these tutorials and experimenting – learning new options has been fun.

This latest tutorial – a braided bun – is one I learned recently from the lovely Vanessa Lachey when I was at an event with P&G in New York City. Vanessa was sharing a variety of style tips – mainly focused on the home, but ended the day by doing this style on one of the girls in our group.  The idea, of course, is that it would be an easy one we could all duplicate at home.

Naturally, I wanted to do it.  So here goes.

What do you think?

Think you can do it?  I promise it is easy!

Embracing You: Ponds #LuminousEffect Twitter Party

I have had the luxury of being 40 for a full 51 days now.  And the only thing that feels different is my resolve…. my true desire to continue living my life fully and with joy.  Am I getting older?  You bet.  Every single day.  But I am enjoying embracing it and I am married to a man who thinks I’m more attractive now that I was when I was 25.  Years ago, my skin wasn’t the first thing I thought about when I considered how I would feel as I aged, but now – I know it is at the top of my list.  My routine at night is just as important as what I do first thing in the morning. Looking my best is a priority for me – whether I’m on camera or on call with my small people – I FEEL better when I’m taking care of myself.

Molly Sims Ponds

In the spirit of doing just that, I’ve teamed up with one of the most beautiful, yet down-to-earth women in the world, Molly Sims and two lovely women I’m proud to call friends, Jenny Ingram (Jenny on the Spot) and Nicole Feliciano (MomTrends) to encourage women to live their lives more luminously. Along side this group of women, I’m co-hosting a twitter party with POND’S®. POND’S® just launched its 30-Day Luminous Photo Challenge.  One2One Network is kicking off the challenge with a #LuminousEffect Twitter Party tomorrow at 11cst/12est. Naturally, Molly is no stranger to the camera, but neither are Jenny and Nicole.  Together, we will be sharing tips on feeling LUMINOUS – both inside and out. (hint: for me, it starts with a smile!)

@DanielleSmithTV, @JennyOnTheSpot, @MomTrends

You still have time to RSVP for the Party.  Prizes include 25 gift bags containing the entire POND’S® Luminous Line of products and a $50 AMEX gift card. There is a specialized tweetgrid for you to follow along – I know you want to stay up with the action!

Make it Easy: Grab and Go for Basketball’s Biggest College Tournament

BasketballMy small girl plays on two basketball teams. She does it because she loves it. She doesn’t get her athleticism from me. She gets that and her love of the game from her Daddy. She also gets her stamina from him.  Which is a good thing since her most recent tournament required she play 4 games in one day.  Add that to the one game from her second team and she played basketball at 10am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 7pm.  If her team had won that 7pm game, they would have played AGAIN.  It always amazes me to watch these girls play their hearts out.

This season is winding down and our family will soon have to settle for watching the games instead of coaching and playing.  The March college tournaments are not far off.  The brackets may not yet be set, but we know who we *want* to be in (Mizzou… cough, cough) and my husband and I always get such a kick out of filling out the brackets.  Now, because we  - in large part due to our crazy sports schedules  - and also simply because life is just that – crazy – don’t always have time to plan for huge get-togethers, but would love to have friends over to celebrate the fun that is an event like the tournament, I partnered with Walgreens to show you just how easy it is to ‘Grab-and-Go’ for what you would need….

The small people and I take you on a tour…

How to Organize a Home Office in 10 Steps: Keeping Style in Your Life

How to Organize Home Office - Ten Steps - ExtraordinaryMommy.comWe moved in to our house six years ago next month. I can hardly believe it has been that long.  But what I really can’t believe it that I spent the better part of that time – more than 5 of those years, in fact, sharing an office with my husband. It is a wonder we are both still standing.  Remarkably, from the time we were moving in, we planned to share an office.  We thought it was a brilliant idea. But it wasn’t.

You see, we both work from home.  Neither of us are ‘quiet’ people.  And my job actually requires some semblance of solitude.  When I need to write – I need to think – and quietly.  So his conference calls, his sudden bouts of ‘funny’, and his random thoughts just didn’t make for a productive environment for me.

Fortunately, we came up with the perfect solution – one that created a space just for him – and one just for me.

And now, my office is my sanctuary.

Here are 10 Tips for Organizing Your Home Office

Do you have additional tips for keeping your home office organized and productive?  As I look around my office right now, I can see that I have neglected to take those 10-15 minutes today to organize the clutter and papers.  I definitely still need to do that.

For more on this series, Keeping Style in Your Life check back every Monday or keep reading.

Amazing Video! Meteor Hits Russia, More than 500 Reported Hurt

I sat on the couch with my small people last night watching the Nightly News as they reported on a giant asteroid that will pass close to earth today – reportedly around 2pm this afternoon.  It apparently won’t be visible to the naked eye… it has been tracked by NASA for quite some time, and it DOESN’T PRESENT ANY DANGER TO US.

And yet, I wake this morning to news that a meteor has hit the Chelyabinsk region of  Russia (it is caught on camera – look below) and it is reported that some 500 people are injured.  Early reports say this meteor may be related to that same asteroid, but it is too early to confirm. This region is more than 900 miles from Moscow and based on what I am reading here and here, many of the injuries are related to flying glass from explosions (as a result of the meteor breaking apart as it fell).  Scientists are estimating it weighed 10 tons and was traveling at 33-THOUSAND miles per hour! Witnesses describe the sound like a ‘sonic boom’.

Watch the video for yourself.  Incredible.

Blood: Water Mission – The 40 Day Water Challenge – Are You In?

I turned on the water in my home today.  I used it to bathe, clean and drink.

It was glorious.

And, I imagine like many of you, I barely gave it a thought as I turned the faucet off and on throughout the day, as I waited for warmer water, cooler water.  This is, quite simply to say, I take this incredible gift for granted.  I drink when I’m thirsty.  I splash water on my face when I feel flushed.  I shower when I’m dirty.  I wet cloths and wipe the food from small faces.

I don’t walk miles to fill jugs so that my family can get what they need.

I don’t risk handing my small people water that is contaminated….poisoning them with the very thing that should be nourishing them from their blood to their bones.

So, it is with this knowledge that I am joining a movement: one lasting 40 days.  I’m joining forces with Blood: Water Mission on their 40 Days of Water Challenge in the hopes of raising both awareness and much needed funds to overcome the HIV/AIDS and water crises in Africa.

Blood: Water Mission - 40 Day Water Challenge

The Challenge is for me (and you if you would like to participate) to drink nothing but water for 40 days – from February 13th until March 30th. The significance of those dates is not lost on this Catholic girl.  Wednesday, February 13th is Ash Wednesday, and officially the beginning of the 40 days of Lent, ending the day before Easter Sunday.  This challenge means I will be giving up the morning coffee and tea, forgoing juices and such in the middle of the day and skipping any wine in the evening. For each drink I skip, I will donate the money I WOULD have spent to the cause.

The Mission

Uganda Blood: Water MissionBlood: Water Mission is a faith-based non-profit founded by the members of the Grammy winning band Jars of Clay. Since 2005, they have been supporting our neighbors in sub-Saharan Africa by working to combat their two biggest challenges – a pure lack of clean drinking water and a rate of HIV/AIDS that is simply too high.  In the past, as they have raised money, they have equated $1 to the amount of money needed to provide one child clean drinking water for A YEAR.

Imagine that with me for a moment.

I skip coffee in the morning = a child has clean water.  I pass on a glass of wine – at least SIX children see water in their future.

Uganda

For this project, money is going to Uganda and wells will be built to provide entire communities with the gift of life they so desperately deserve.  In Uganda, 33% of the people do not have access to clean drinking water. This breaks my heart.

I am just one person.  But, I can help.  And so can my small people.  And so can you.  Imagine the difference we can make together.

I am not doing this because I have to.  I’m doing it because it is the most beautiful, life-giving gift I can give.  I have taken it for granted too many times in my life. It is time that I put some energy towards sharing this gift.  This 40 day challenge will be a constant reminder to value its worth and to appreciate my opportunity to be able to share it.

Blood: Water Mission makes the 40 Day Water Challenge so easy.  Not only can you register in minutes on their site, but you can keep track of your progress daily and check in on the thousands of others who have already made the commitment.  Isn’t it always easier to do a challenge like this surrounded by the inspiration and motivation of friends and a supportive community? At the time of this writing, there have been more than 34,800 drinks given up for the project (And note: the official date hasn’t started yet!) by just shy of 5-thousand people.Screen Shot 2013-02-07 at 11.59.44 PM
More than 76-Thousand dollars has been raised.  I will soon be adding to that total.  Each time I skip a drink of any kind in favor or water, I hope on to my profile online to ‘Add a Drink’. I list what I

*would* have had and how much I saved.  This is money I’m pledging to donate at the end of each week.  The challenge allows each Sunday to be a ‘free day’ if you would like to sip on a favorite something.

Please consider joining and donating.

Clean water shouldn’t be a special gift… it is a right.
Disclosure:  I have two drips on March – one is to Napa – and a portion of that trip will include Wine tasting.  As the trip was planned before I was aware of the project, I am stilt attending and participating.  I will also be attending Blissdom, and may very well enjoy a glass of wine among friends.  If ever there is a situation like this, I will donate double the cost of the drink for that day.

Additionally, I am proud to be working with Blood: Water Mission to help spread the word about this amazing charitable push.
