Finding My Center

Sometimes life gets a little heavy.

You find yourself settling under layer after layer of junk until your breathing gets labored and you struggle to focus.

You can’t work, you can’t play, you question every little thing you do – from your ability to take care of your family – even doing laundry seems complicated  - to completing work tasks – are you sure you can get it done?

The little voices in your head work both ways….  ”Of course you can get it done….” battling it out with, “I’ll never finish….”

When this happens….as is clearly the case right now….I try to focus on what is most important in my world – my center.

This picture showcases my center.

Four people – two big, two small.  Experiencing joy in the setting I love most in the world.

Somehow, some way, this moment captures the place I need to be, the feelings I need to internalize.

I’m trying.

What do you do when you feel a little lost?

When I get lost & overwhelmed, I make myself a map — in the form of a to-do list. Turns out, usually I’m feeling like there are DOZENS of things to do, but when I just write it down, it’s not as bad as I was building it up in my chaotic mind. If the list gets a little long, I’ll throw little treats in the middle of the list, like this: -empty dishwasher …. – fold Mt Laundry …. -2 Hershey’s Kisses …. -tackle email inbox …. -mail client disks (makes to-do lists WAY more enjoyable)

similar to yours…I go back and look at old photos of when the kids were babies and when Jon and I were first married. We’ve all come a long way and life is super full and way to big sometimes. Those pics bring me back to where it all started and remind me of the only true things I need in this life. my fam.

Carey – thank you so much for that – my to-do list is a little scary, but I’m trying to do as you suggest – a bit at a time :)

Meredith – you are so right. That is exactly how life feels right now – ‘too big’ – but I’m breathing and focusing! Thank you!

I get a little lost whenever I have way too much on my plate and as counter productive as it sounds I give myself a day off. A day to sit in my jammies and watch awful TV and eat junk. Sometimes that day off is just what I need to get re-focused. Usually I’m up and moving again before the day is over.

    That’s an awesome picture !

Like you, going to the beach always helps me shift myself into low gear, and re-charges my batteries.

When I can’t make it to the beach, I like to listen to uplifting music, or I like to sneak away for a little breather (book stores), or take a relaxing bath.

    Hang in there Danielle! :)

Oh Jen – I soooo want to do that – but there is something about my brain that won’t let it happen. *sigh* maybe a half day? :)

Lisa – I love everything you do – those are all the things I try to do….. I definitely wish I had a beach nearby – I would ALWAYS be stealing away :) thanks for commenting!

I, like Carey, get my thoughts out on paper. From there I create a prioritized to do list. Often writing down all my obligations and to-do’s helps me quickly identify the one thing that is making me feel the most pressured and harried. That is usually a signal that I said yes to something that I should have said no to and I find a graceful way to exit that obligation.

I also pray. No one can provide me with clearer direction than God and His Word.

I understand this post more than anything right now. When I get like that I try to focus on my little ones and my husband. I try to remember what truly is important and thats them.

I know this feeling so well! It’s easy to get overwhelmed with little ones and your own business. I try to remember how lucky I am to get to spend so much time with my family, and that this time will go quickly. Sometimes I just take the day to play with the kids, and even though it seems overwhelming not get anything done on my to-do list, I feel like it’s a good break to be away from the computer, and it reminds me why I am doing all if this. A little change of scenery and perspective, and taking a break sometimes does a body & mind good! :-)
