Where are my pants?

Meet the Small Dude.

the-small-dude

He just turned three.  Loves baseball (hence the helmet), is afraid of, well, just about everything, is ALMOST potty trained (please, please, for the love of ALL THINGS, poop on the potty!), and has recently developed what I consider to be a gargantuan problem.

He keeps taking off his pants.

Naturally, he has to do this when he goes potty.

However, he DOES NOT have to do this in the backyard playhouse.

Nor does he need to STRIP DOWN TO NOTHING when we have friends over.

Do you understand where I am coming from?

I mean, isn’t he cute in clothes?  I especially like him in blue…but, I digress.

Don’t get me wrong – he has the cutest little bottom in the world, but seriously??!!??  Do we need to show it to everyone?

Unless any of you tell me otherwise, I am going to ASSume I will be seeing less of his, well, you know….

Oh boy, I can’t help but chuckle…not at you, with you. We are going through the same thing with our toddler, Kaydence. She’s not quite two and is going through her naked phase. We put zipper footed pj’s on her backwards so she can’t undress herself.

Ha! That is quite adorable! I have a cousin who is also 3 who does the same thing. He claims his underwear doesn’t fit him so he just goes around in just a shirt. He will decide to stay home instead of go get ice cream because he hates wearing clothes that much!

  • http://www.loulousviews.blogspot.com Loukia

He is totally cute! Good luck with the whole pants thing!

With your son about a year in a half older than mine you are always making me aware of the things I have to look forward to, it is amazing how quick we forget. I know Jackson will not sleep with covers so I can’t imagine he will like clothes.

Uh Oh…is this something I should prepare for? Coop is so cute though…I would probably just laugh if I saw him do it!

  • Lori Meyers

I feel you girl! My oldest grandson, who just turned three in May, does the same thing! Takes off his clothes where ever and when ever he wants. No regard for where who is around. He is SO PROUD of himself when he accomplishes this task! I care for him 5 days a week while mommy and daddy work. Boys will be boys! I think it is just a stage of life we have to deal with. (even though his mommy did it too when she was his age…so did my boys! lol! Great story! Potty training is going about the same with Camden as it is with your 3 year old wonder. By the way, Camden Fenway is named after Camden Yards and Fenway Park……His great grandfather was with the Browns and the Yankees many moons ago. His daddy loves baseball also.

My four year old daughter has taken to whipping down her panties and shaking her tooshie at me. Thankfully she only does it at home – but when sh catchs me off guard and it sure does make me laugh!

  • http://happilyblended.com/ Brandy

Oh gosh that post makes me giggle and hope my almost 3 year old does NOT do the same when he gets to be that age. He actually has always and still does {knock on wood}hate being naked….Good luck Mama!

You and I are un-officially/officially related. You call him “”small dude. I call my 5-year-old “small dude”.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND I call my baby “baby dude”.

    We are sisters in dude-dom.

  • http://runwatchplaywait.blogspot.com Kristi_runwatch

LOL!! If it makes you feel better we used to have neighbors with triplet boys – they all went through the naked thing together. The mom would notice one of them naked in the yard, just get him dressed, and the other two would be naked!! Hilarious to watch, but I cannot imagine what her life was like! ;)

  • http://Hoo-dee-Hoo.com meredith@Hoo-dee-Hoo.com

Oh, the joys of naked little boys. I have two little dudes and I think it’s some primal male thing to whip of their drawers any chance they get.
Thank God they have such cute little bottoms.

  • http://www.banteringblonde.com fiona

my daughter is going through this stage! My boys are older now but they still hang out getting dressed having a pow wow all nekkid…

  • Mary

Hilarious. If he tries this out around Audrey, she’ll wonder why he still has his umbilical cord.

Too funny! I too have a 3 1/2 year old. A few months ago we were at an airshow and he started to pull down his pants. My husband and I caught him before they were all the way down! He said, “I need to go potty.”! Social Graces are often not a 3year old’s strong suit! :)

  • http://www.spawnocalypse.com Deb

Too cute. My 2 y/o is also obsessed with pulling down his pants–a skill we so brilliantly taught him in prep for potty training. A good friend told me to pick my battles on this one, so we have almost unlimited pants-free time when we’re not in public. When I need him to wear them, I pick hand-me-downs from beloved older cousins. For some reason, Jo-jo’s pants are cool to wear (usually). Good luck. Love your blog!

  • Becky

LOL, I can absolutely relate, when I started dating my husband, his daughter was only 4 and she loved to run around with no pants, it’s what she called the underwear gang. She will be 10 in August and if we would let her get away with it she’d still strip out of her pants and run around in her underwear. From what I hear from my husband’s parents is she gets it honest because the first thing he always did when they went to his grandparents house was take off his pants and curl up on the floor with a blanket. She is her father’s daughter!

  • http://www.emmymom2.blogspot.com Emmy

My 2-year-old won’t just take off her close on her own and streak, but if her clothes are off for any reason, going potty, bath… then well she is off and running laughing all the way.
What is with kids! Cute blog!

  • Rhonda

Whew…there are days when I think I’m the only one going through this! I have learned to let him “do his thing” at home – but when my husband comes home on the weekend after traveling all week, he doesn’t find it quite as adorable as I do. So, I get to enjoy the chase scenes (quite comical) of naked little man being chased by daddy man holding pants and undies. Feels like I’m watching the Keystone Cops :-)

  • Maureen

Ha! My Joe is 8 and he is still prone to stripping down and dancing around! Not so much in public anymore!
I’m laughing because of all of the moms who think their child will out grow it in a year or so!

I am happy to report that my older children HAVE out grown it!

  • Louise

If it makes you feel any better, as a (very) young child my parents allowed me to swim (and swim only!) in my tiny little birthday suit in the little tubs in the back of their house. Our house was completely surrounded by trees and our closest neighbor was a good mile away and access to our house was on the OTHER side of these tubs via a skinny dirt road (I loved it). HOWEVER when we would go to the community pool during the summer that I was three (like your son) it took me probably 30 seconds to get from the picnic table to the pool, and by the time I got there, my swimsuit was somewhere behind me. My parents did NOT think it was funny, but if I remember, it only took me until the next year to stop. I think it just takes time, and even if it’s not exactly “funny” at the time, my parents sure laugh about it now (and tell every one I know). I have a 10 month old, so we’ll see how she does in 2 years. Ha. Ha. Ha.

  • Meralee

I’ve actually heard suggestions to have kids go without pants when you are trying to potty-train them because they are more aware that they don’t have a diaper on and it makes the training go quicker.

  • Amanda

:giggle: my daughter did much the same… And still- at almost 4yrs old she sees no problem with taking her pants and panties off after an accident and going to play with guests in the living room… without getting re-dressed. *sigh*

I call her the streaker. My husband calls her the naked ninja. And her dad- well, he just sighs.

  • http://waynekoranadenverandwillakelly.blogspot.com/ Korana

Oh I got such a chuckle. We have friends whose little boy, 8yrs. old, has to undress completely whenever using the toilet for #2. Not only that, but he will then sing loudly while doing #2. We went on vacation with them last year and heard a lovely rendition of the Star Spangled Banner emanate from the bathroom!

  • Amber

My brother used to do the same thing. It was fun to tell his future wife the stories when we first met her.

  • Tina

ha ha ha….the lil guy just mastered dressing and undressing and you want him to refrain from flaunting it??? Cute, but no….and besides, doesn’t if feel good to be naked? The wonderful thing about kids, they do what the rest of us WISH we could do!!

Don’t worry, he’ll learn to keep his clothes on long enough to be out in public! I promise! :)

  • Chellie

Ha Ha…I feel for you..when my now 17 baby was younger 1 1/2 to 2 years old he started taking his clothes off and running around, he even did this at wedding dances, he did not care!! Like I said he is now 17 and while he no longer goes naked he does run around all of the time in just his boxers, doesn’t matter who is over he does not care!
We all call him nature boy adn let him do his thing, it is for the most part harmless and we are thankful that he is at least wearing is unders now?!

  • Kevin

Hey, I feel ya! My daughter went through that at about 2 or so. (She’s 11 now and fully clothed, Thank God! lol) The biggest thing I remember is our son was 5 at the time and kept demanding to know WHY her “buttcrack” came all the way up front!! Cracks me up(pun intended)everytime I think about it! All I know is, enjoy them while their young.

  • Jennifer

Just passing by, read about your beautiful picture used on an ad in Prague. Crazy how that happened. re: little dude w/no pants on….Being a mother of 4 boys, I have to say my 2 oldest went through that phase. They both loved to be naked and would run around w/no clothes on. I cant remember which one liked to have no pants on. (I want to say number 2 son). I do remember my oldest would go to the potty naked too. He used to do that until he was about 5. Heaven knows why?!
Now that they’re 14 and 17, I can relay this to them next week. One is graduating from middle school and the other one is graduating from high school. I’ll start by saying, “I remember when…..”
Thanks for the memories! Great blog you have here and what a beautiful family you have.-Jennifer (brad, 17, kyle, 14, bryce, 8 and Kurt, 5 months.

I have a 2 1/2 year old, same freakin thing!!!! lol

That child loves to be naked. We live near the beach and we walk down there often. Even though i have never taken his clothes off down there, everytime we get there he thinks its time to get naked. “We at the beach mommy, i gott get naked!” lol

i guess cause he sees the guys take their shirts off he thinks its the same thing? lol i dunno but I dont think its gunna end anytime! sorry! haha

  • Dorothy McCullin

Oh my I remember those days. My daughters are now 33 and 35 and I think there were about 2 or 3 years there that I spent most of my day running after them trying to put clothes back on. Yes he will grow out of it and it is one of the cuter stages you will find that he is fasinated with. Don’t close your eyes as they will be grown and gone before you know. My youngest daughter and her husband were stationed at Scott Air Force base for a few years, it is a very pretty part of the country. I enjoy your blog and you have a beautiful family. Thank you for a good read.

  • Zu

Indeed adorable. I agree with whoever said it must be a primal male instinct. I’m still a teen, so no kids for me, but my boyfriend complains all the time how he just doesn’t like his pants. Not in a sexual way, but he just…doesn’t.
My little brother can’t stand his pants either, and still doesn’t. He’s wearing boxers and Hanes around the house whenever he can! More power to the pantsless-ness!

  • Trent Lamb

    Danielle,

Nope, it is a phase, and my little guy is now 19 and over the years we finally got him to at least keep his pants on, but he still sheds socks and a shirt. Not sure what gets little boys to drop trow, but seems pretty common. In the end, they get the idea that we only take our pants off to go pee-pee, poo, or get ready for bed.

Snickered the minute you mentioned it. Have fun Mom!

  • http://N/A Mary

Thank you so much for sharing this! My 3-year-old (boy) is in the SAME stage. A week ago, he welcomed our brand new neighbors by sneaking into the backyard – after stripping off all his clothes and his diaper, of course – and standing on the very top of the playstructure completely naked. He welcomed our new neighbor – who is a very sophisticated single lady w/ no kids having wine on her deck with her very sophisticated single lady friend by yelling “Hi!” and flicking his….welll, you know. Embarrassing! But a good story to hold onto for teenage blackmail purposes :-)

  • heather

That is too cute your little boy is adorable. My 4 year old daughter does that too but its only when she goes potty or gets out of the bath tub thank goodness it isnt in public, but I am sure she wouldnt care me on the otherhand I would be completely mortified but thats what makes kids so adorable is things like that.Best of luck I am sure he will outgrow it:)

  • Jim

We had a “naked one.” Naked in the neighborhood, naked on his bike at the all-church campout, naked, naked, naked.

Our naked #3 of 6 is now 6’1″, finishing his B.S.. in (are you ready?) Youth Ministry, haunted by “are you Sam? I remember when you were naked and ……”

Your son will outgrow it, but will never out live it.

My adorable 4 year old son was standing with our family out front saying goodbye to friends when all of the sudden I look over and he was PEEING IN THE FRONT YARD. I do not understand boys at all.

Thankfully my friend is the mom of 5 boys and was totally unfazed. But seriously what is it with boys and flashing it all out there for the world to see?

  • Margaret

I dont want you to be concerned but I have a friend who has a son who is 23 and still does the same thing…with a little more modesty though. From the time he was a toddler he didnt like pants or shorts “they were ITCHY SCRATCHY” in his terms. He would undress even in the malls when we would go shopping. I was hard to keep pants on this boy. And even today when he comes home from college or even work, its into the shower into his boxers at the most and runs around the house and even the back yard this way. The other thing is he showers continuously. He has to be clean all the time. I have seen this boy take upwards of 5 showers in a 12 hour period…. so I’m just warning you sometimes it doesnt get any better…LOL
Oh and another thing you have a wonderful blog….

  • Erin Schiavo

LOL – I have to smile. My now 7 year old son did the same thing. We actually had to make a rule that “you have to have clothes on when we have company!” The grandparents especially didn’t understand. The phase probably lasted about 1 1/2 years. I have plenty of pictures to embarrass him with. I can tell that he is now very modest and is horrified if I accidentally see him changing. Enjoy this time – its an age old saying but it does go by so fast.

  • Morganite

It must be a toddler thing because our neighbors have a son that is 3 and they are having a hard time keeping his pants on too. Unfortnatly we have a Dismal Debbie that lives in our neighborhood that loves to cause trouble for these people and she called the police complaining she saw him running around with no pants and it is child endangerment and can harm her child if a predator is around. Now this wonderful family with the normal toddler have to deal with CPS.
